Allison did you read my PM ? No response ?

I ridiculously excited. My broody has managed to hatch an egg from my 4 yr old dog-attack survivor, Falina the Barred Rock. She is one of the 3 original chicks I brought home from Hawthornes. Three chicks because we only wanted 2 chickens and were advised to take a third "just in case." Yep, 2 chickens. That idea really stuck.

My broody is a polish silkie cross, and while her dedication has been unmatched her ability to SEE the eggs she was tending was spotty. I'm surprised any of eggs made it. We have 2 hatched and 4 maybes. One chick pipped but didn't make it out alive.

Falina is one of my favorites, and one of two hens that treat me like I'm their mother.

Super friendly girl, Falina.

in my experience it never gets easy to loop off a head, goes against the grain of my thinking.with that said i mentally talk myself through it. they where welll cared for.The more i think about the chickens in those tiny pens ill treated at butcher time and transport the more it makes sence to me to do it myself.I seriously think twiced before purchasing commercial meat.knowing most likely that animal did not have a happy life from start to finish.that is what drives me to raise and butcher my own.
just my 2 cents on it besides its a practical solution to to many roos in the hatch.
Ya'll are so brave. I've contemplated processing any roos I end up with, but I just don't have the heart for it yet. How does one toughen up to perform such a task. *sigh*

Thank you All-American-Chick. That's definitely a beautiful way to put it. One day I hope I will have the courage. I love my birds so much!
