San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

She is recovering!
Glad she is feeling better!
i have hatching eggs available now and hopefully goslings on the 10th from my Sebastopol geese. pm me if interested
Congratulation... so cute!
I have successfully found two plants that my chickens will not touch!!!! I'm sure there are others, but hey, one step at a time. The two I've found and currently have growing happily in my garden? Rosemary and lavender! I figure the bitter nature of those two plants may be what makes them less appealing than others, but they are the first two I've found that my chickens go out of their way to avoid nibbling. They'll eat everything else though, the leaves off rose bushes, falling rose petals, ripe rose hips, banana leaves, goji berry, blackberry, raspberry and blueberry leaves plus the fruit from each, Grape leaves, and the grapes. They try to grab the leaves off my almond and peach trees, but those are a bit too high up for them to reach. They try to jump, but still to high, but definitely hilarious to watch!

Oh, they haven't tried to eat my dragonfruit, but I think the reason for avoiding that cactus is pretty obvious hehe.....All my garden veggies I keep safely in a greehouse. Every now and again I'll opening up the greenhouse and let them in to nibble here and there, but that's never for very long. By the time I open up the greenhouse I have an excess of greens that I am more than happy to share and boy do my peeps love Love LOVE chard!!!! hehe

What other plants have ya'll found that your chickens seem to avoid like the plague?
Mine destroyed all my plants, grass, bushes and trees too... but my rosemary and my cacti are still here LOL. That is the joy of free ranging!
This isn't chicken news, but I received a Happy Monday gift this morning... babies. Now counting the 6 chicks in the bator, one more is a question mark.

.
Are they fainting goats? Really cute babies and beautiful mama... she did a great job!
I went to the feed store this morning to get some feed. There were a group of people around the baby chicks so of course i had to check them out. To my horrible dismay a mom was letting her toddler pick up the chicks and drop them. I had to put a stop to the insanity immediately. The store owner thanked me after laying down the law to the offenders. two of the poor chicks were injured

, one with spradle leg and another with what appears to be a slipped Achilles tendon. Well both chicks were given to me free of charge, as well as 2 more just to keep them company. And all I wanted was feed!!!

The lil one with spradle leg brace was applied and although it is a bit annoyed seems to be doing ok. The one with the slipped tendon, I rolled it back into place and used a bendy straw as a splint. This one not looking so good

They are all Anconas.
Arg... it makes me mad. I am so glad you say something.
So Oz just dropped off the cream legbar roo!! THANK YOU OZ!! tomorrow I'll introduce him to the "girls" he's bigger than the girls right now but I'm sure they'll love him...he's so cute and sweet, may have to call him teddy lol
I saw him at the Norco meet up. Very sweet guy... he actually was getting bullied by some Welsummer hens if I am not mistaking.

What is it about the one with the straw splint (genius, btw) that is worrying you? I have a new appreciation for the ability of chicks to heal after one of our chicks had a very ugly leg break - exposed bone and all. It took a few weeks of TLC, but today she walks normally and you'd never know she'd been injured at all. Here's hoping your little one heals just as well.
What I am worried about is that I was too late trying to help her out. I was reading about this particular infliction and all say it needs to be treated in the first 24 hrs. I don't know how long the poor thing was hurt, but i checked on it tonight and the tendon was out of place again. All I can do is keep trying for a few days, and if it does not work, decide if she would be able to survive like that. I know they are very resilient, but don't want the poor lil thing to get picked on her whole life.

Or I build another coop for the special birds

As I was typing I thought about the same thing LOL
Both were!

i
i have been trying to convince people i another thread that i was cute as a kid - even got my mom involved (she lurks on BYC) I had to concede that I am now as ugly as an average duck coop floor - so she must have been talking about the roo.

I am going to do an incubator workshop at OffGridMAMA's meet up.

I will bring a Hovabator Genesis and a farm innovators styrobator that I modified to be able to set and forget. I will also bring two home made bators that are complete as well as a half built one so people can see the construction.

I will discuss choices of design, insulation, thermostats, heating, air circulation and ventilation as well as tips on successful hatches.

I hope to see you there

Quote: Slipped hock tendon or tendency towards it (Perosis) is often due to vitamin B12 deficiency.
I would give supplemental vitamins ASAP.
