These days most companies don't hire direct. So you have to find the Contracting company that services the type of work you want to do. Used to be you had to forego health insurance but now Most good contracting companies offer it. The other deal is you don't get vacations you get the usual days off but no actual vacation days.
My work as a contractor was usually sign on for three months and take it from there. Last three month project I did lasted me two years. I gave up shooting for a long term job back in 2000 when Qualcomm layed me off. BTW Qualcomm is an excellent employer for Software developers. My profession as Mechanical Designer has been moved out of the country for them..... sigh. But I know people still working there as programmers developers and are very happy.
