San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Just got laid off. Company merger and the new company that bought us out only kept the developers with 'Senior' in their title. I'm seriously disheartened and sad. I just want to find an employer that I can grow old with. After my first job of 8 years, I have not been able to find a stable enough employer to keep me longer than 1.5 years!!!!

Anyone have any job recommendations that I can apply for? I've done software development for well over 12 years and I'm more than willing to branch out.

*sigh* Thanks

So sorry to hear that you go laid off vannaHaines. I have no advice as I gave up my job search years ago, but good luck to you and if I hear anything I will forward it to you. (We have quite a few friends in the industry).

Thank you, I really appreciate it. I wish I knew of other jobs I could apply for that would pay close to the same as what I was making that aren't necessarily software development. Would be nice to branch out a bit.

Quote: I bit that bullet about three years ago. I work on contract though. You might just do that. Contracting used to get you a little more money in exchange for a chance to learn a new field. These days most companies don't hire direct. So you have to find the Contracting company that services the type of work you want to do. Used to be you had to forego health insurance but now Most good contracting companies offer it. The other deal is you don't get vacations you get the usual days off but no actual vacation days.

My work as a contractor was usually sign on for three months and take it from there. Last three month project I did lasted me two years. I gave up shooting for a long term job back in 2000 when Qualcomm layed me off. BTW Qualcomm is an excellent employer for Software developers. My profession as Mechanical Designer has been moved out of the country for them..... sigh. But I know people still working there as programmers developers and are very happy.

Sadly Qualcomm is the reason I'm currently out of a job. The company I was working for was purchased by Qualcomm and I guess mine and a few other's weren't good enough for them.

Quote: Damit..... there are lots of companies around town ranging from Biomed to Gaming.... Quicken has their main offices here too. Surprisingly a good resource for ideas is the EDD offices. The one in El Cajon has an assortment of classes ranging from Personality testing to a basic Excel class. The deal is this would be YOUR opportunity to see what areas you can slide your skills over. I know you mentioned you wanted to do something different....
