George Carlin -"Who Really Controls America"

George really says everything so much better then i ever could. I like the whole idea of and then there would be food growing everywhere. If there was more food then we could work less. or so is the thinking.

Pam Warhurst: How we can eat our landscapes

These are both funny. I love what she has to say about getting the local hens to give local eggs.
Food is a universal language

YYou are not crazy :) or you aren't alone in your craziness!! I did it, I left my corporate job that was killing me slowly. It was very hard, many changes and sacrifices must be made. But it can be done. I've been 'free' for almost two years and I've never looked back. Granted my husband still works, but I was the primary breadwinner. No more fancy house but we have everything we need, and lots of chickens :) it can be done.

Thanks! My Hubby and i are trying to plan a trip to Montana and Wyoming maybe look for a different job and a ranch..... I've lived in San Diego my whole life, both my parents are from here, I'd really like to do something totally different.
Like you I am the primary bread winner. Not that i mind, My hubby is really, really handy and if i had to pay someone to do the work he has done for the house (chicken coops alone...) well he more then makes up for it. He was building my daughter a playhouse that is looking more like guest house. I did design it - which in small spaces is really hard... I got my inspration from http://vintagegirl1.blogspot.com/2010/07/victorian-cottage-in-woods.html My hubby built the house we're living in, small, 1300 sqf but i like it that way. Now if i could just get him to build me more build in storage...

If anyone has some nice towns to check out somewhere there are nice ranches for decent prices that are workable (can't really do anything with out water) I'm thinking wyoming or Colorado Maybe Montana. I'm totally open to any info on cute liveable towns. I know Durango is really nice but if i have to work as much as i do here to pay the bill.... thats makes Durango not so nice.

Here is a website that I paruse about once a month. http://www.landwatch.com/ You can key in your acreage house and price requirements.... as well as the use of the land. Weather its for farming or ranching.... When i find something i am interested in I look up the realtor that has that listing just to see what they have in the same areas.... Very interesting process...

Nevada is a good choice because they have no state tax. I have also been seriously looking at New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and some parts of Texas. I too am a native Californian but these are places I have looked at.

Be aware There are parts of Arizona where you cannot drill a well the aquafer is more than a thousand feet deep. you have to setup a big water tank and have water trucked in. So research that very closely. Colorado has laws that prohibit rain water water collection... unless that has changed in the past couple of years.

There have been a few ranches in New Mexico that are completely off grid already..... And for good prices too. I even found an old airport near the satellite array for S.E.T.I House was pretty cool included garden area and lots and lots of out buildings. My son is getting his degree in Astronomy so I would love to be near any of the commercial space development areas.

In Nevada Around Reno and Tahoe you will find land that often times will have two types of wells..... One for drinking water and one tapped into geothermal energy. For heat.

Oh and you can get a whole section in Nevada for around 100k and not too remote either. Nevada is big cattle country.

I to love the El Cajon EDD office, I used their office when i was last looking 13 years ago.
Corporate america likes to lay people off as it shows a quick lowering of the overhead and usually takes longer for the slack to get noticed.
We've had 3 or 4 or 5 rounds of lay off - i can't even remember, how i manged to survive them? I work day and night, hate it, don't get much sleep, and I want to spend more time on my mini farm with my family (slice of paradise). Sadly there is no money in Chickens.....

I dream of shooting wedding photos - everyone is so happy at weddings and I love being around all the happiness. I have done the photos for 3 wedding and i did like it but I'm a perfectionist and the after editing is very time consuming. Hard to do with the farm as a spare hobby.

Another dream would be designing lights - i love chandeliers. Solar light are my new design fun.

Or opening an Esty shop to sell crafts, i know when i was looking for things like the paper craft banners for my daughters mermaid theme 5th birthday, most of them were 4 or 5 weeks out to complete orders. If you like to do that type of thing with paper crafts. I make a ton of crafts and usually give them away to all my girlfriends as I'll have to many of the same type thing. People come to buy a chicken sometimes they go home with a rock with a transferred imagine or word, But that was last months passion, Currently I'm all into old signs, flour sack towel transfers and lace crowns and solar mason jars.
Heck i could do all of them and have a farm co-op and prune trees or give lessons... or anything like that.

I say figure out what YOU LIKE TO DO- not what pays the best and then learn to make that work.

As for me, I'm planing on getting pregnant in a few months and them staying home and hopefully doing more of what i never had time to before like planning and decorating the most awesome B-day party's.... Kind of tired of all the stress and worry and not seeing my family (they're asleep when i get home) I want to start doing unschooling.

Sorry just my 2 cents that no one asked for. I'm just really, really over corporate america.....If i didn't have such great benefits... I've attached some photos of this weeks crafts, i don't sleep much, still. My husband says I'm crazy so I'm sorry if I've dropped my craziness bomb as i seem to be good at that.

So wait, are there 3 of us that live on the edge of RSF??? I am on the north east side, in Elfin Forest.

I've heard tales of bobcats and mt lions here, but in the year we have been here haven't seen them. I de believe I lost a chicken to a bobcat a year ago though. All my chickens and goats free range in a larger corral and luckily (knock wood) we haven't had many issues. We do have 3 llamas next door and our property is pretty open, not many places to hide, I'm hoping that is what is keeping them away.

I lost a free ranging hen yesterday. Not sure of the predator, either coyote or bobcat. Bums me out. Of course, one of my prized hens....always seems to be that way. My fault really. I should have had the donkey out. Lesson learned. Looking forward to the meet up on the 28th. The kids won't stop talking about seeing all their chicken loving friends :)
