San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Here is a website that I paruse about once a month. http://www.landwatch.com/ You can key in your acreage house and price requirements.... as well as the use of the land. Weather its for farming or ranching.... When i find something i am interested in I look up the realtor that has that listing just to see what they have in the same areas.... Very interesting process...

Nevada is a good choice because they have no state tax. I have also been seriously looking at New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and some parts of Texas. I too am a native Californian but these are places I have looked at.

Be aware There are parts of Arizona where you cannot drill a well the aquafer is more than a thousand feet deep. you have to setup a big water tank and have water trucked in. So research that very closely. Colorado has laws that prohibit rain water water collection... unless that has changed in the past couple of years.

There have been a few ranches in New Mexico that are completely off grid already..... And for good prices too. I even found an old airport near the satellite array for S.E.T.I House was pretty cool included garden area and lots and lots of out buildings. My son is getting his degree in Astronomy so I would love to be near any of the commercial space development areas.

In Nevada Around Reno and Tahoe you will find land that often times will have two types of wells..... One for drinking water and one tapped into geothermal energy. For heat.

Oh and you can get a whole section in Nevada for around 100k and not too remote either. Nevada is big cattle country.

I have used that Website and i like it - but its not the same as getting good local advice on an area. We have Friends that moved to Wymoing and they explin how most of the large storms go thru this mountain pass so they get less snow - or something like that. Also have a friend that lived in Montana and she was telling me about an area that i thought was beautiful but she said they had a mine event that left the ground water very bad. So on a research trip / chammber of commerce info searching we go.

I have been to the tahoe area a bunch of times, I love Milton and Gardenville - never really conceeder there would be two wells..... I love the idea, i have seen the Mammoth plant and love that it blends in to the terrian, unless you're really looking you'd never find it. I have been to many of the hot spring in the area, i got the book and try to get my hubby to stop at a different one ever year. Keoghs hot spring right before Bishop is my all time favorite. Easy to get to and its running water with vistor made stone pools, total natural looking and you could part your trailer 50 feet from a pool, yet they're not overly crowded. there is a resort to stay at with a pool but i prefer the natural running creek, water is like 85 and since it flows really well its cyrstal clear. Only bad thing is you tell that there are teenagers that must visit because who else would leave broken glass....

The only time i stayed in New Mexico it was Windy and we had a plant there and i spoke to my counter part and she said it does seem to have a nice breeze often, her nice way of saying windy.... I could see roads that had sand on the edge. I don't care for wind. And the locals i meet... Didn't seem to smile as much as i would like.

Sleep, i've got chicks hatching.... I can't sleep.

Sad sad sad day on the farm today. I went up to milk the goats and my mastiff Maya didn't come out to greet me like usual. I
went over to her dog house and she was laying on her bed outside of it sleeping- and not breathing. Maya died last night in
her sleep. I have never ever in my life just had a dog drop dead like this. She was acting fine except for limping a little from
a cut pad on her foot, she was just up and chasing coyotes two days ago. She didn't eat much dinner last night but that's
kinda normal for her since we free feed her she doesn't wolf it down. I just don't know what happened. She was all up to date
on all her vaccines, de-worming, everything else. She seemed fine and healthy in every way. I've heard that Mastiffs can have
heart problems, but we had her heart checked by the vets when we got her and no murmurs and she used to go hiking and
running with us all the time. She loved dogs beach. She was only 3 years old. RIP Maya, we loved you.

I lost a free ranging hen yesterday. Not sure of the predator, either coyote or bobcat. Bums me out. Of course, one of my prized hens....always seems to be that way. My fault really. I should have had the donkey out. Lesson learned. Looking forward to the meet up on the 28th. The kids won't stop talking about seeing all their chicken loving friends

So sorry about your hen. I agree that it is always the best prized ones. Such a bummer. As you know I lost my sweet Elektra and I am still very upset about it. She was my best girl from my BBS pen. The good news is one of her chick hatch this morning.

Life in general is such a crazy balance, and stress can wreak havoc on your health and emotions. I think it's really smart to look ahead and plan for future happiness, whether that's here in SD or on some far-away piece of farmland. You'll never get back the precious few years that your kids are small, so I say enjoy them to the maximum!

Looking forward to seeing everybody next weekend. Until then, may we all experience no more losses, and welcome lots of new chicks!

That's very sad Cari. Amongst my Saint Bernard friends a couple have lost them young like that in their sleep. I think the heart of a big dog has to work so much harder. It just happens. I hope to find my big ones passed in their sleep. It's really what I want for them. Again, very sorry.

Charlotte, I'm so glad that you have one of her chicks.

Can anyone answer this for me? I'm loading up my Octagon 20 right now. My SFH eggs aren't real big so they don't fit snug in the channels. Do I let them tilt on one another a little or is there something I need to put in the dead space (if so, what?). I'm hoping that I have some eggs from my blue hen that I lost yesterday. Thanks

We also have another little addition to our farm, just came in the mail yesterday... and we are SO EXCITED!!! Brand New Brinsea Ova-Easy 190!!!! WOO HOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have ducks, turkeys, Ameraucanas, Easter and Olive Eggers in there now... set them last night... First test run, woo hoo!!!
Wow thats great! Welcome to crazy town, its way fun here! We (and our clients) can't wait for more of your auto-sexing olive eggers to hatch! :)

Cari,

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Maya was such a gorgeous and well behaved dog. Having just lost a dog who was so special to me, I know how hard this is. My heart and prayers go out to you and I hope you can get to that place where you just think about all the joy she brought to you and your farm. My favorite memory of her was one day when we came to pick up feed and she was walking around the property with a blue egg in her mouth. When she was callout out for it, she gently dropped it into your hand - totally unbroken. What a beautiful, gentle, giant.

Sue
