San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

I have this one, which is split to white. It came back to me, sold a black pullet, they had a white roo, and raised this and a cockerel, were over their numbers so I told them I'd take it back if they needed. She is out of a very nice black pullet, and the dad, I don't know anything about, white, probably not as nice as the mama was.. $20 if you want this one... I go to Valley Center every weekend, so the drive shouldn't be too horrible.

Hi What Not....

From Santee and Jacumba... El Cajon is right next door to Santee. I think she should be good to go. They just relaxed the laws about chickens in San Diego. Probably with three acres you can even have a rooster.... El Cajon is a big place lots of rural fingers poking in amongst the Burbs.... As long as the chicken house is fifty feet away from the property line I believe you are good to go.

Oh and it has to be fifty feet away from the house as well. The only other thing that might be a problem that I know of is if they are in a gated community with Home Owners Association fees. They might have a rule to exclude livestock. But there are Many places that are three acres that have horses in El Cajon.... some places even smaller than that. I would venture to guess if there are horses in their community Chickens will be a non issue.

Again as long as you dont piss your neigbors off even if there are rules against.... Fifteen years ago I had four hens on a Residential lot.... a small one at that 60 x 60. In an older section of Santee. No one complained and I had them a couple of years... till a dog got into the coop and killed them.

Thank you so much...
Sorry to hear about the Dog problem years ago. WOW - IN Oklahoma I'm allowed to shoot my neighbors dog's & though I'm an animal lover, people here dont seem to care about letting their dogs run wild! So I keep my Gun in the Barn.
I am looking forward to Helping my Neice in July set up her new coop Auntie is buying her. I think they might just have problems with cyotes?
They live up in the Hills by Alpine (same area where my parents raised us) and we had Horses back then, But a lot has changed in 20 years..

Harbison Canyon area? some nice places in and around there. You wont have Any complaints about chickens for sure. Its developed some but I think there is a minimum lot size of three or four acres...

Coyotes are a big issue. If shes around the Harbison Canyon/Alpine area there also WILL be Bobcat and Mountain Lion on top of the usual predators Hawks Raccoon and possums Bobcat and Mountain lion also range over that area. In Jacumba where my chickens are I had thirty chickens taken in thirty days by a bobcat. Jacumba is about twenty miles away though.

Hardware cloth is your friend for the coop. Best to have a good sturdy run too. Because you will need to supervise free ranging. And a run will give them them space out of the coop for those times no one can supervise. If your family has dogs it will help deter Coyotes but DANG they are quick. I use Dog kennel panels for the run with Hardware cloth along the bottom where the chickens could come in contact with the chainlink. They are relatively inexpensive at Home Depot.

Its going to be Hot in July too so plan on doing some shade tarps unless they are lucky enough to have some trees.
