San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

So...I heard a cock-a-doodle in my backyard, but couldn't make it out there fast enough to see which one of my "girls" was making the noise. They were supposed to all be hens! I'm new to chickens, so this is probably a really dumb question...but do the hens ever make that noise? I really don't want to get rid of any of them since we've raised them from being teeny tiny, but I'm not zoned to have any crowing foul. This was a weird occurrence- never heard them crow before. They're about 13 weeks old now. Thanks for any info!

Hens CAN crow if there's no rooster, but it's more than likely you have a roo. Either that, or you have a neighbor with one.

Sorry Deb, about the downsize thats tough to go through. Wish I was closer to your place.

Where do you get the beer grain? I have been thinking about giving it a try.
I have the spent beer grain and sell it on craigslist for $4 for 5 gallons and $10 for 17 gallons (you need your own container or we sell the 17 gallon barrels for $25 and then you can just change them out each time you need more.) Goats, pigs, chickens, turkeys and emus love it. I feed them 1/2 beer grain and 1/2 lay crumble or grow. I get it in a 55 gallon barrel for $20 but most people can't use that much before it goes bad (it lasts for about 2 weeks). Maybe I'll bring some to the next meetup so everyone can take some home to try it. During hot spells I freeze it in bread pans and then put it out so they can peck at it.

OK. Thanks for the info. I will be re-homing one of my babies in the near future if a she is confirmed to be a he. The idea of eating fertilized eggs also gives me the willies.

So interesting. Yes, bring some if you can, I'd love to try some.

Did you know that there is no difference between a fertilized or un-fertilized egg (unless it's been incubated)? Also some store eggs are fertile, I have even gotten some at walmart. There is a thread on BYC somewhere about that, and people have actually hatched out chicks from grocery store eggs. lol ...just sayin ;)
