San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Ok Pumps in Talked with the well guy and here is the skinny on the well.

480 gallons. That is all my well column holds.

The new pump pumps 7gallons per minute half what the original pump produced. So in 70 minutes the well goes dry rather than 30. Pump saver switch senses this and stops the pump before the well goes dry. So far i havent had it flip so I suspect the recovery rate is pretty good.

So.... I am not going to be taking any long showers at the house. The booster tank only holds 25 gallons. This boosts the pressure up for shower taking.

There are two booster tanks near the well. One I am told is done.... broken.... not functioning.... So He says I only need one to get the water up to the house for now. But later on it will go. 500 bucks a pop.

So the solution.... For me Is to live with it till I can buy a new booster tank... Probably another two months. Then PLAN on Switching my water source from directly to the well to directly to the Big storage tank. There I will have stored 3000 gallons of water. this tank has a pressure tank connected to a booster pump. From there If its plumbed to the house it will blow the faucets off with pressure.... This way I can leave the water source trickling into the Big tank ALL the time. Pump saver switch will protect the pump. The well guy says it should take ten hours to fill a 3000 gallon water tank and I can just turn it on and leave it on..... Yay.

Pipe that went down into the well was not black pipe but PVC.... Yay. The reason he suggested going to a smaller pump is the well is sandy... less suction No sand. Therefore the water coming into the house will be clean. I can get rid of the sand filters which were a PITA in the first place.

Katees water is good pumping away when I went up to the house. Every where else the water is off for now. While the water was not working the rabbits ate the hoses...... So Goat water will need a new hose. Chicken water will need a new hose. BTW we saw ONE chicken today.... Yay. My Araucana Roo Hot stuff survived. There may be others but I am holding back optimism.

Tomorrow I go back up and assess things.... Clean out the coops of "debris" and catch the roo if I can and get him back in behind safe containment.

hugs to you Deb, you have really been going thru it lately, let me know closer to spring if you want any thing I've got and i will hatch some out for you. and keep em till they are off heat.
Thanks... I really appreciate it. I have started a coop rebuild page and as soon as I achieve some progress I will share it with the group. Part of that rebuild is a Livestock storage tank for water...... No more getting caught like this... sigh.

Gosh, Deb - what a rotten run you've had! I hope this is the end of the bad news, and that everything is peaches & harmony from here on out. Big hugs to you!

sounds like things are working.

be careful you may end up with a whole lot of chickens from bycers.

I wanted to ask if anyone has or will have any chicks hatching soon? I would like one or two ? My brahama is brooding. She is 3 years old and i for some reason is now brooding. I dont have fertile eggs and she has been at it for 7 solid days.

It is funny. I take all the eggs and put her out. Then ten mins later i find her back in the coop sitting on nothing.

Is anyone looking for roosters? I have some that are 4 weeks old. Cochin, brahma, Plymouth, orping, ee. Also I have a welsummer and a dominique that are not crowing that my daughter brought home from kindergarten in spring. And one really cute silkie rooster he is cute and he just started to crow. I dont know if anyone wanted them. I dont want them chasing the dutch bantams they are tooo little.

What part of the county do you live in? I'll have some hatching out the 31st.

Today I found three baby chicks under my broody bantam frizzle cochin. 2 RIR and 1 EE with a Blue Andalusian for a daddy. Wonder what they will end up looking like!!
How good will momma be at protecting "her" babies from the flock?
