San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

We have 4, 1 Black Australorp (Heaven), 1 Buff Orpington (Sunny), 2 Rhode Island Red (or so we were told, but experts here at BYC said they are Production Reds) - Red and Robin. We got them from Hawthrone Feed Store in Escondido, My daughter is the one who did all the research and convinced us to get them, and she loves Silkies too. I am also anxious to see eggs, but looks like still about 2 more months to go...

I'm going to have to check out Hawthorne and their chicks when we eventually have to get rid of what may be 2 roosters...

My sons kindergarten class hatched eggs as a project and somehow I got suckered into taking one home...turned out to be the best thing ever.

What do most San Diego folks do with a Rooster they need to get rid of? Craigslist... take it back to the feed store.(one said I could bring my silkie back)?? Eventually we will have to go that route...need to have a few ideas of what has worked for others in successfully re homing their Roo's. Thanks!!!

This is spike.. Blue copper maran... We think. He was the one my son picked out from school. Sadly, before we knew anything about chickens he picked him out because of his spikes. Lol we may have another silkie white roo ... But I guess won't know for sure for a few more months.

Some feed stores will take them.... Then give them or sell them to someone who wants a rooster.

Often times they go to freezer camp...

If you bought your chicks through the feed store they only buy females. But even the hatcheries can make mistakes so they will guarantee only a percentage of accurate sexing... like 99 percent. So even if you buy sexed chicks there is that one percent possiblity you will get a roo.

WE have meetups and there should be one coming up soon. Bring suspected roos with you you may find a home for them. Or if you arent sure bring him/her with you and someone will be able to tell.

I was just up at Double S feed store and they had an adorable Roo big stout legs and feet.... Looked to be about eight weeks ol Possibly a cornish cross. I wish i had my poultry house set up... Loved the Kazoo crow.
