San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Those jungle fowl are very pretty! And yes, the BBR OEGB looks a lot like a miniature version of that hen! I have pics of my two a few pages back. I'm anxious for my little roos to mature, so I can see how pretty they get to be. I don't know that they would be quite as striking as that Jungle Roo, but they come from good lines, and I have high hopes!

I wanted to say how much I enjoyed myself last Saturday. I wish I could have stayed longer! I missed the Turkens, and the coffee..

but my DD was bugging me to get to the birthday party she was invited to.

Nancy, I'm sorry I missed you. I hope you didn't have to take a bunch of plants home.

Lynne- your little birds are just so beautiful! I hope some day I have some extra room, and I can get some from you. For all of you that bought Lynne's birds, I'm so jealous!!

Cari- I loved your BLR bantams. They were really neat looking!! And your bunnies were adorable. Were all those SLW from your own breeding stock? I have a SLW that is about 6 weeks older than the ones you brought. I am curious about the differences I noticed. Chicken breeding is just so interesting to me! Sorry we didnt' get to chat plants, but feel free to contact me anytime if you have any questions I could help with.

Tigerrrrrlily- Duck Duck is just a wonderful ball of energy isn't he! I loved his little diaper. Keep me posted on your SL OEGB project. They really intrigue me. They are as tempting as Lynne's birds!!

Naomi- Thank you for all your coordination, and hard work. It was a fabulous day. I may have recruited a new chicken lover in your neighborhood. I did a garden consultation over off of Darwin Dr., and the lady of the house there asked me to check Oceanside's chicken laws. I think I sold her, when I told her about how my daughters paint my hens' toenails with sidewalk chalk. Darwin is near you isn't it? N. Santa Fe & Melrose?

Al- You took home some great chickens from what I could tell! And I'm sure Cari will give your ducks a terrific home.

Michelle- You took home two real sweeties didn't you!! I liked both of them very much. My DH has mandated a chicken moratorium for the time being, otherwise I think I would have taken home at least 5 chickens last weekend.

Alison- THANK you for the chicken bells. I attached mine to my wallet, and enjoy it every time I pull out my ATM card. My youngest daughter put hers on her school backpack. My oldest daughter is a chicken hoarder in training. She won't tell me where she put hers. I saw those cute pics of your NN roo. I wish I could have hung out long enough to see all the turkens. I'm not quite sold on the featherless-ness, but I'm a sucker for a great personality, and I was really hoping to meet them, so that I could become a NN convert.

Crazy Huhn- Cute pics!! It was cute watching you introduce the mealworms to all the birds that didn't have any idea what you were offering! I think most of them figured it out didn't they?

Cara- Your seramas were so cute! Those babies, wow, how much cuter can you get?? I didn't even ask if you were selling them. I really didn't want to know,.... for my own good.

To whoever had the Silkies- WOW, what neat birds!! First time I've ever seen them in person. Yes, I totally want one of those now too, but alas... the imposed moratorium....I like being married, rather than single, so I go along with it.

I've got baby silkies for sale.... not that I want to get you divorced or anything (lol) but thought I would throw it out there if anyone is interested. They come from very nice parents. I should have brought them to the meetup but I had no idea there would be so many people and wasn't sure if anyone would want any, they were only a couple days old at the time.

Hi, thank you! Yes the SLW are from my own breeding stock. I am currently working on my 3rd hatch.

I'v noticed that they vary from the parents quite a bit... What differences did you have questions about?

Chicken breeding is FASCINATING to me, well all genetics are... have you seen the "chicken calculator" yet? I've been known to play on there for hours! LoL...

There has never been a chicken or duck that did not like the mealies. Even "duck duck" was crazy for those....

Oh no, a chicken calculator? I wish you hadn't told me about that, I may never get off this darn computer! I'm keeping all my chicken notes on the calendar, it's so convenient. I feel really bad that I've already forgotten some of the faces that go with the BYC names. Sunny - help me out! And I think I left too early to meet a few people. Guess we'll have to have another meetup!

I thought Cara's Seramas were really cool - I certainly learned a lotta chicken last weekend. Also, I had a question about Cari's SLWs. They look so completely different from mine. But I've also seen pics of Seabrights, and mine maybe looks more like that. Anyway, can't wait to introduce my new girls to the old girls, and I'm still waiting for that first egg (patience is not my strong point - but I'm working on it) . . . all bets are on Marsha, Lynne's 'white' cochin!!!

Hey everyone, MY silver pencile B serama hen and SDW roo have produced 8 eggs now together, I am not even going to try to hatch them, they are the size of a medium green grape, ITTY BITTY, he was the one that started for crow for those who were watching him. I think this year is going to be totally exciting for the sermas, i have a really good breeding plan worked out. I want to specialize in the silver duckwing, spangled and barred seramas. I think i should consult a priest before attempting this. Seramas really dont breed true to color, but i can hopefully start a consistant pattern going. I will have some nice babies coming up in the next few months.

So will those serama eggs get larger as the birds mature ? Posted below is the first eggs from my little Showgirl and I thought that it was small ! Maybe it is a pretty good size for a bird which weights almost 2 pounds ? But grape size ? That is the size of a robin egg !

I'm so glad duck duck was enjoyed and that he was able to visit with everyone. Thanks to all for welcoming him, for giving him tons of attention and for understanding his quirks -- and especially to crazy for giving him the yummy treats! I'm sure that made his day.

Just for fun...

A "BIG" thank you to all of you that have posted regarding the birds you purchased from me. I'm so glad they all seem to be working out.

KKHen- Isn't the little MF D'uccle pullet adorable? I have one that rides around on my shoulder like a parrot. You will love looking at their little faces as they mature. Their beards & muffs become fluffy & they look like they are wearing lace caps.

Enzolove-Marsha will start laying soon as she is one of the oldest pullets that I brought. She is an Oct. baby so I think next month will be the target date.

Sunny CA- Don't worry about not getting birds this time. I hatch every week & have teenagers available throughout the year. I will be sending a Quad of Mille Fleur Cochin to PA next Monday to a well known breeder of Silkies. If she does as well with these birds as she has with her Silkies, this color will be on its way to being recognized by the ABA.

If anyone is interested in purchasing birds, just send me a PM & I can let you know what is available & send pics.

Lemon Blue Standard Cochin babies born January 21st.

Again, thank you all for the great meet-up & looking forward to another.
