San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

WMR - those photos are amazing. I've never actually seen chicks just as they hatch. They do look exhausted. It must be so cool to check on them and see all the progress. Clearly, I could never allow myself to get a 'bator......there would be no way to control the chicken population at my house. And, I don't think chicken math would even come close to dealing with it. They are awesome, though. Send more photos!

"trouble" is my middle name......... (UPS or other ways always possible.....)

But seriously, we will will have to do it again soon.

LoL yeah I have a problem I admit it. I'm up to almost 80 chickens... shhh don't tell DBF- he doesn't know the actual numbers!

It is very tiring for them. They starting pipping this morning zipping this afternoon and by evening they are hatching. I've been glued to the 'bator all day watching... DBF just came in and said "Your STILL sitting there!" LOL!!!

I have a feeling a lot more will pop out tonight. Hopefully we can get some sleep... they hatch with a GREAT set of lungs and are LOUD!

Maybe you guys can help me pic my submission for the photo contest!?!?!?

I got my incubator Yay. KW Cages is a manufacturer right here in town that sells
nationwide and they carry incubators. I got the Genisis 1588 Preprogrammed with egg
turner for a rediculously low price and I didnt have to pay shipping.... Yay.

While I was chatting with the clerk he asked me what kinds of chickens I was going to
raise I told him about what I wanted to do about putting together three or four colors of
eggs per carton. A woman standing at the counter lit up.... Started asking me if I were
going to be selling chicks.

Havent even got one chicken and I alreay have a potential customer...LOL.

Hi, Do you mind pm'ing me with the price of the Genesis? I was suppose to buy the Hovabator from Crazy Huhn but it got sold before I got there. I wanted to use it hatch eggs because I feel the ones I have are kind of tight for hatching.

Was debating between the Brinsea Hatcher but not sure if I want to spend that kind of money.

Thanks,

Nancy

Allison, I decided the Silkie Bantams were not for me and had wanted to sell them and let the money go to Tigerlilly since they were her eggs but since she had so many of them, I took them back. I plan on keeping the offspring of the BO but dragged her along for warmth.

I was pretty surprised to see the BO go at it w/ my chickens. Not sure if it was the BA or Black Sex Link but it got pretty ugly. But near the end of the day, they were all fine. I think they were a little scared of her and whenever she got close to the food, they let her have it. Should have seen her crop. Ah ya ya. They both ate everything in sight. They had tuna, boiled eggs, scratch and sprouted wheat berries and tons of mealworms.

With the Scruffy hens, I am right around 30. 14 chicks, 4 silkies, 1 BO offspring, and 14 so 33 chicks. Grand total of around 63

Yes, I think the RIR is going through a molt and she has lost alot of her feathers. I am sure she will be laying soon.

I do not think it is that hard to integrate. Everything should be fine.

Yeah, I heard you brought the chick. You'll have to post a pic for me. The RIR was my best layer, she'll get back on track. I've never seen either of those birds even peck another bird. They were low in their flock. I guess the BO has seen a window of opportunity and is giving it a shot. You can't blame her for trying!

How many birds do you have? I'm so fascinated with how many different kinds of birds that people keep. I wish you could throw any bird in a flock and they'd all live in harmony. But then, if it was that easy, we'd all be in trouble!!

Morning Cari!

Congrats!
Difficult choice, but, if I were to choose, it would be one of two, "Just one more push!" (the all the way around pipped egg with the
eyeball visible), or the one that says "He aint heavy, he's my brother!" (with the humidity gauge).
Great job!

If I get my plow going and can get out, I will try to pick up cage this weekend. Sounds like fair amount of white stuff on it's way tho..

Great pics Cari! So did you say 6 so far? How exciting!!

My baby Serama from Cara is doing really well. She doesn't have any chick friends though...so she's becoming human. She went over to the in-laws for dinner with us last night. They got a kick out of her. She's sitting on my fingers as I'm typing right now.

I got my first egg from my OEGBs!!! It was so perfect and cute!! Both pullets are about the same age, so I should get another one laying soon. I may wait until after the summer fairs, to put the roosters in with them. I don't want them to get too scruffy from mating, and not be in good show condition for my kids' 4 H events.

OK so waking up this Am I looked just like the chick in # 2 photo. I could not sleep last night thinking about my seramas arriving today. Not I am at work!! the good thing is I went by my post office in ramona, and spoke to I thought was the janator, she ended up being the person in charge of the priority and overnight mail and she is DROPPING THEM OFF AT MY WORK!! onb her way back to the post office.
