Like Perchie said, working with a rescue gives you the opportunity to return the dog (most rescues make you sign a contract) if it doesn't work out and will give you a refund or find another dog for you. Not over and over and over of course, but they do want you to be happy and make the right match. Also, most rescues have dogs in foster homes and can tell you more about the dog. Probably not a lot of foster homes like mine with chickens, but you can always ask a rescue if they'd be willing to bring the dog over and test it out. Before I had a cat my friend's poor cat was always subjected to testing the Saints.

I haven't had my labx out with my chickens because she has hunted rabbits and eaten them on the property. I figured she had a high prey drive. Well, my oldest son was visiting and didn't listen to my instructions....he let the dog out while the chickens were out. I expected to find a half a dozen dead chickens. To my pleasant surprise I had no dead chickens, BUT she was chasing the crows that were trying to get into the coop away!!! You just never know which dog is going to be "the one".

I did a little research on this because I know the old tyme horse traders used to slip arsnic into the horse feed to make them gain weight. And Yep thats why they add it.

Andddd may explain why the US population is fluffin up too. Just Speculating here...

CAChickenNewbie, you didn't ask, but I've got to say it. That rooster shouldn't be allowed to risk hurting another hen like that. He also shouldn't be allowed to reproduce. You
don't need genes like that being passed on.

@ Cari: I've got to start seriously thinking about raising some meaties. DH served chicken tonight. When the kids asked for more, honestly, I felt like I was feeding them poison. . . and actually, probably was. . . Not a good feeling at all.
Have you thought about having a workshop, teaching some of us how to process? I'd be willing to pay of course.

Sure! That's a great idea! I've offered to show a few people here and there but if you guys wanna learn come on up! Just let me know when! I have 4 roosters that need done soon, so that's a great place to start!

Bragging mama here and sorry for changing subject,

Jared won best of show with his little serama mama from chef glen.
There was around 12 birds there and well she rocked the house.

It was for his field day for 4 h but not bad for first year with chickens.
Also he did 3rd out of 6 on showmandship.
So proud of him.

There is a farm here in El Cajon that has classes on processing. I took Goat and Sheep husbandry there and they are very good folks. You can find them on Craigslist for San Diego. But feel free to PM me or Email what ever and I can pass on the information.
