San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Hello, Everyone!

I think we can lay claim to the shell-less eggs in vinegar thing. Daniel (my nephew) and I were doing egg experiments, and he liked this one so much he wanted to bring it to the chicken meet. We covered regular eggs in vinegar and let them soak for a few days (changed the vinegar once). The vinegar reacts with the calcium in the shells, I think, and within a few days they look like that. You can see right through them, and are kind of rubbery until you squeeze too hard - then it's very, very liquid. I think he was hoping there would be kids there that might want a tossing contest. Definitely the egg-chick-pics above are the next experiment on the list - too cute not to try.

We had lots of rain, lots of wind, and hail at least three times here in Clairemont last night.

Makes sense this is the way Gelatin is extracted from Bones. They soak the bones in Vinegar.... Very strong Vinegar it dissolves the Calcium so it can be washed away. Calcium is extracted from the acid and used for supplementation. What is left after a little processing is the gelatin that is used for Jello. That's why Vegetarians wont eat it.

Take a Wishbone and soak it in vinegar over a couple of days and you can tie it in a knot.

Cool that it works on eggs..... I am going to experiment....

Thank you for having us. We are looking forward to see if Basil our broody silkie frizzle will hatch the 4 Olive Easter egger eggs we got Saturday. We traded them for 2 jars of lavender lemon curd. It's our first time using a broody hen for chicks. Now if I can only convince my DH to let us keep one ;)

Hey Compost Girl-
I just read your post about the eggs. I had to take a picture to show my son because he loves science and Angry Birds. I also saw that you are in Clairemont. That makes 5 families from Clairemont that day!

Have a great day -
Kristal
