Thanks for mentioning Hawthorne, guys. Now I have to go out there today. I am naming all of you in the divorce.

By the way, Nephew Daniel is gung ho - has a custom-made long-term farm plan booklet and everything, since the goat thing was brought up (thank you, Cari). Mom is trying to figure out how to fence the backyard next year for minigoats, after an earnest hour-long conversation with the goofy boy. Grandmas are suckers for anything, I think. City boy turns farm mogul, but it could be worse (I think it might get worse in Clairemont today. Thanks again, everyone.)

I'd love to get in on the Modesto order, by the way. I'll need something in a few weeks. Maybe chick starter, too.

What a cutie.

As a coincidence. We had a surprise visit from my Cousin Bill and his new wife Carol just yesterday. Carol raises goats and sheep up in Red Bluff CA. She was saying new goat moms are not so good at caring for their newborns. Whereas Sheep have it on the ball. She had one Goat Deliver quads, she lost three of the babies and the doe because the doe prolapsed severely in the process. But one little teeny billy survived hes about the size of a house cat. They are bottle feeding him. She was laughing saying he was an Opinionated little fellow.

Two of the mommas put their babies in this water tub for their nap. She says they will park those babies somewhere in a pile then go off to eat on their 25 acres and those babies will stay put till the mommas come back.

Nigerian dwarfs are probably the best choice. My little Dew Drop is only as high as my Knee. They are excellent Dairy goats too. My Four came from a Navy family and were raised in Imperial beach in a Cinder block walled back yard. Before any ordinances were changed. The goats had an area of about twenty by ten for their "yard" and a big wooden garden shed for a house. The people got away with it along with chickens because the neighbors were very supportive.

All those baby goats were bottle raised INSIDE the house... Hee hee. Goats in the house are Serious business.... When They are little no prob.... when they are full grown and unsupervised.....Sigh... I know.

When i came home and saw that black one i said this is the one.
imagine my tears when i relized both the moonspots where bucks.

But I am thankful all went well with the delivery, since we were gone to our eldest sons olympic games.

thank you all for the prayers for the goats.
they all came through it this year in perfect shape.

Hey chicken folks.... I need some helpful advice here....

I need to add a run to my chicken coop. I'm pressing my luck letting them roam the yard when I'm not really watching them. A cat almost got my little OEGB hen yesterday, and I have kestrals and big hawks around too.

1. Where do I get the netting that goes over runs? I like what Dana has over her chicken run, but I haven't seen it at the box stores, and Hawthorne couldn't give me any leads.

2. What is the best way to secure the ground area so that they don't create holes to get out? I've seen some deep basins that they've dug for dust baths that could easily create an opening under a traditional fence. I also want to keep critters like cats, possoms, snakes, and raccoons out.

Thanks,
Chaili

Renee, those are all beautiful babies!! It would be soooooo hard to choose, even worse than picking out roosters!

Chaili, what I've done with my runs is attach 1/2 " wire to the bottom edge of my base board and run it out flat on the ground two feet. Then I attach chain link also to the base board on top of the 1/2" wire. I weave the sections together. So there are two layers of wire, one big and strong for coyotes, dogs, raccoons, etc. . . and one small for snakes and other critters. I stake it down to the ground and let the grass grow up through it. Despite that, I still managed to have a ground squirrel dig a tunnel from the edge of the wire into the run. I like to think my runs are Fort Knox, and with the exception of a persistent squirrel, nothing has gotten into them. Dana should be able to tell you where to get the netting. I used wire on top of one run and covered the other.
