Last time we went, my husband thought something really weird was going on. He asked me why I'm going to a meetup, but had to take four rolls of multicolored duct tape (chicken hats), a bottle of sunscreen, and $200 cash. And why I came home with feathers in my hair. Sounds like a wild weekend in Vegas.

I am willing but I need a large dog crate to quarentine her in for a bit. My latest duck is still using my big crate because she can't go in the duck pen at night - my boys pick on her too much. She's still building confidence. We are building a duck yard so the dog crates will be temporary. My ducks free-range during the day but get locked up at night to be safe from coyotes.

Someone came to the lake and dropped off several Pekin ducks this weekend. When I came along, this female was with Louie the gander and two male Pekins and she could hardly walk. Her back was also all bloody. I thought, at first, that Louie had hurt her, but I think he might have been protecting her because he seems to get upset when the males gang up on the females. When I went to pick her up, he stretched out his neck at me, but let me do so.

I moved her to another place at the lake away from the males, but she got really upset and began looking for me in the road and parking lot. Then, I moved her to another spot and the last I saw her, she was resting in the shade in the tree and seemed to be at peace, but she seemed to perk up when I talked to her.

Is there anyone here that can take her in? I'm sure I can catch her again. I don't think she's eaten much in the last day and doesn't seem interested in bathing. I carried her around a lot and she didn't poop on me at all. She can walk a little bit, but not much. Otherwise, I will have to leave her there, she is too loud for me even to take home for a couple hours, plus the manager said that I absolutely can't bring her there at all not even for a second.

Here is a picture of her. When I held her, her legs were really hot, but they seemed cooler the second time I carried her around.

I have a big plastic crate (Doberman sized) at my friend's house in Mira Mesa. You are welcome to borrow it if you wish - just PM me if interested. Might need to be scrubbed...

ETA: There are two other ones that were dumped at Lake Murray with this one. They were panting, couldn't quite figure out what to do. Both hens. I'm sure the lake would be happy for you to take them, catching them is another thing.

Oh, good. I'm a sucker for ducks and so is my hubby. All 3 of ours are rescues. Glad you are taking care of her : )


BTW - the only chick to hatch from my incubator is obviouisly a roo. Currently, he is living in a modified rat cage in my son's room. My son didn't listen when I said don't touch until it's dry. Now Andy is completely imprinted on my son. So...figured he can have the bird in his room as a lesson DON'T DO IT AGAIN. ::evil snicker:: Anyway, going to kick the bird out to the barn when he starts crowing but running out of room. Don't want to put him next to the D'Anvers because Mama with her babies (same age) is too protective and so are the D'Anver Roo's. Andy's daddy won't accept him right away, either, so want to find a cage that I can put just outside the house to keep Andy safe from Coyotes but still be near to his people. Started getting him used to it by putting his cage out on the porch during the day (with my dad keeping an eye on him).
