Iowa blues sound great - how much do you want for it? $8? Hummm - I will say to myself: "You will NOT buy another chick, you will not buy another chick... "

Where'd you get the Iowa Blues? I love to see a picture!

The Black Copper Marans should not have sexable dots on their heads; that would only be from a mix with a cuckoo/barred bird. I have four FBCM/FBlCM right now, and there's no heads dots anywhere (and at least one is a cockerel). Sorry! I know it's so nice to be able to sex at hatch, but unfortunately these guys don't follow that rule.

thanks, what was it then that i hatched from yours that had the dot on its head?thought it was bcm
iowas came from an egg swap

That was from a Cuckoo Marans...

The eggs are not as dark as the Coppers, but they do make some nicely sex-linked chicks! I have one Splash Cuckoo chick right now; can't wait to see how it grows up! Hoping it's a pullet, but kind of looks like a roolet. Ah, well.

In a pure Cuckoo x Cuckoo breeding, absolutely. What Renee hatched out for me was an OE mix of Black Ameraucana roo x Cuckoo Marans hen, so the chicks were very easy to sex at hatch. They are just over 13 weeks now, and look like Black Ameraucanas with feathered legs... I can't wait to see how they lay! (The one cockerel out of that mix had some beautiful barring, but he has already become dinner.)

If my Splash Cuckoo chick is indeed a roo, I plan out breeding him to the OE pullets mentioned above. He should have the double barring gene, and that ought to give me some very nice BLUE OE babies that lay deep olive eggs! Fun, fun.

I have barred olive eggers and I have yet to ONLY use a double barred male (this year I selected a double barred roo and a single that looked just like a barred ameraucana) and used them on my black and barred Olive Egger hens. Next year I hope to get a double barred roo (or roos) that I can use solely on my project so the spotted chicks will be males.
