Dana and Deb, So sorry that you lost birds. This heat is brutal. I had some 6 week old pullets panting like crazy this morning and it wasn't even 10 am. . . I moved them into the garage. I'll be down the hill tomorrow. I hate leaving when it's so blasted hot out.

Thanks I have to leave mine for three days at a time.... because of my living situation. The best I can do is provide them good space and shade and BIG buckets of water to drink from. I feed 25 lbs at a time and my water buckets are at least five gallons. I am still working on plumbing for the coop my two big projects turned into experiments in futility. If I can get them all on automatic waterers I will be soo much happier.

I do LOVE my Brahmas! All so sweet and such personality! Even my girl that's broody ATM (with 13 eggs under her!) doesn't peck at me or get mean. She just looks at me and clucks distressingly

Hmmm, this is interesting because I have been trying to figure out the pecking order that is being established. My Brahma is the one doing all the pecking!! She has 3 other chicks (7wks) that she is constantly ruffling her feathers and and pecking and pulling feathers. She seems to leave the other 4 alone for the most part. I was going to research to see if they were more agressive....but I thought they were supposed to be more docile......

The heat has been extremely brutal and especially so because it came on all of a sudden and not gradually so the animals didn't have time to adjust.

It was 100* here yesterday, everyone was panting their heads off. I was really worried for the rabbits but they seemed ok, but today is another day to battle!

Freeze water jugs or one liter bottles of water and put them in the rabbit cages. they will stretch out along them to get some releif.

Any tips other than lots of water for the chickens? Mine are around 9 weeks. I have been giving them chilled watermelon, covering part of the pan to make shade and making sure they have a lot of water, but don't know anything else to do.

I do this but my bunnies don't seem to be interested at all. I keep doing it though, figuring it must lower the temperature in each cage at least a bit.

I bought shade cloth at Home Depot and put it along the side of the run the sun points through. It really lowers the temperature in there and the hens do spend more time in that shaded area than the sunnier parts.
