San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Too bad the park doesn't catch them, heck I'd even be willing to take extra males for the table.

I feel that the staff tries very hard to deal with the dumped waterfowl, but, unfortunately, they have too much to do and too little staff to deal with the never ending drop offs. One of the staff members didn't even know about the two ducklings that were there a couple of weeks ago even though they were there for several days. They're dealing with getting ready for fall and fire season right now and are focused on that.
I think, though, some people think they're enhancing the lake by dropping these ducks off. There used to be a lady who purchased swans there all the time. When one pair of swans died, she would buy more. She wanted to see swans there, so she continued to buy them until she was told to stop after the last two pairs there lasted less than a year.
I've talked to people and most lake visitors have no idea that all, except two or three, of the non-flying domestic ducks have been there less than two years. There are about 30-35 domestic-type ducks there, including large mallard mixes.
The fact is if people were to dump dogs over my fence onto my fenced in 4 acres and I didn't feed them, take care of their wounds, give them shelter, I'd be cited or arrested for animal cruelty. I think the lake, knowing that this happens, needs to have something in place to deal with it. It should be included in their budget, their staffing, etc...It's part of running the place, people WILL dump ducks and other waterfowl there. It's very cruel. I really wish the police would do a sting operation and make examples of a few people. It'd go a long way.

Animal control does patrol the area now and then, but I don't think they pick up dumped ducks unless there is an issue like with the ducklings and the fishing sinker.

I wonder if the "dumpers" realize that they are not doing a good thing.
They may think it is a nice place for their unwanted waterfowl.

And on another note, I just hatched out (to my great surprise) 5 wheaten/blue-wheaten ameraucanas from "peachick" stock. The eggs were nice and blue. They were an impulse buy. Please PM if anyone is interested. Will add picys later.

I want them! PM'd you! =)

I didn't see the dumped ducks today, but I didn't have time to do a thorough search. I sure hope someone picked them up and they're safe. I'll let you know if I see them again.

I have a bunch of started frizzle silkies available if anyone is interested. Also some silkie crosses that look similar to houdans with crests/beards but smooth feathering, some bantam frizzle polish too. I also have some of all still in the brooder and serama cockerels available. PM if interested in anything.
