San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

It turns out she is a bad mom. I caught her off the nest this afternoon for a good two hours. I don't think this will last for too long. Silly chicken.

One of my hens just hatched 7 out of 9 eggs and she was off her nest a couple hours everyday.
I hope your hatch also. Good luck

Get your free Swedish Flower Hen cockerels here!!
I have a half dozen good looking boys. The first two pictured are younger but they're sparring. Silly boys! I have four of the other, older boys. All are non crested. I have 2 crested mixed cockerels if anyone's interested in adding some poof to their flock. PM me if you're interested. I live in Julian but am willing to meet somewhere if they're going to a good home. Thanks!

She has officially given up. I guess motherhood is not for everyone.

On another note I had 3 Legbars hatch today...all boys. What luck!

Interestingly though they are all very different colors. One is quite dark, almost charcoal, one pretty standard colored fluff, and the third is quite pale. I am tempted to grow them out just to see how the final coloring in them works out.

How long can a chicken go without food and water without injuring itself? I changed the bedding of the coop/run to sand and three out of my four five-month old pullets are totally freaked out by the sand. They haven't gotten down from their roosting bars since last night, 19 hours ago. I thought they would have come down to eat by now. Should I just let them figure it out on there own, or force them to come down from the roost?

LOL.... I did the same to mine by putting shavings in their coop. I had to round em up and shove em in the door.... Because I had to go home. You might lift one up and set her on the sand. .....

I do too. So tempted to keep one, we'll see. He's the biggest of the bunch, they're all friendly too. I have got to stop kissing on them!!!
I think that most of them are quite attractive and wish that I could accommodate another male. But I want to say that there is some one on the yahoocalifornia chicken groups that hatched SFH eggs out of three dozen eggs no roosters only hens. Eat your heart out SFH peeps
