Sand in a run

That pic of the dogs in the sand is so funny! A few years ago we got a truckload of sand delivered to spread over a soggy place in our yard (long before we had chickens). Before we got it spread, every cat in the neighborhood rolled in it (not pottying, just rolling and playing), and you wouldn't BELIEVE the birds! All kinds of wild birds came and rolled, dustbathed, and literally PLAYED in that sand. I was amazed, and almost hated to actually spread it out. They kept playing like that periodically for months until the grass had come up through the sand... my dad said horses will do the same thing.

Hey That's good to know. If I ever get sand again, I'll leave any leftovers in an area for birdies to dust bathe.

yay I got 350 pounds of construction sand today... I cant wait to try it out!!!

I put sand in my run too. Locally here, I went to Lowe's and got 1000lbs (.33 cubic yards) bag for $25. Had to use 2 bags and it empties pretty easily with a shovel. It sure looks nice and both the dogs and kids loved it, before the chickens took it over. Since my chickens are new in there new home, I had to go out tonight and show them how to access the home. Was cool to see all the chicken footprints in the sand.
