Sand in coop run?

Does anyone have ant ideas what to put in chicken run ground that is fairly inexpensive I hate my chickens running in the mud It drives me nuts. When ever it rains which has not been a lot this summer I put hay on the ground for them to walk on or shavings. I thought about wood chips. What do you guys think? Thanks

Hard to beat sand. Drains well, chickens can dig in it easily.

Fallen Autumn leaves, pine straw/needles, grass/lawn clippings
spread seed in it to encourage the chickens to scratch around & mix it up

wood chips = no / hay = no
