Sand needed in the run?

Ooooo, I like no pests! I don't know if you've looked here, but My Pet Chicken sells DE and would ship it to you. I can't believe they would sell non food grade DE to us chicken folk... Here's the link to the page.

DE is Diatomaceous Earth, I had to figure that out too. EE is short for Easter Egger. They lay green/blue eggs and lots of people seem to have them.

Most of the breed abbreviations can be figured out once you start reading the threads. It might be a good idea to have a list though for us newbies... Took me forever to figure out what OEGB was! I pretty sure it's Old English Game Bird, right everyone?

I was thinking of doing dirt and sand mix, with straw on top.

Should I just do a sand floor with straw? I guess I'm not sure what I was going for with the dirt, more bugs for them to eat? Maybe grow some grass or get sod for them on the dirt?

This flooring option is killing me!!

From everything I've read on here, straw is bad because when it gets wet it can get moldy. I was only planning to have dirt or whatever foliage is there for them. I am now planning to have sand after they've cleared their run to keep the moisture down.
