This will be my first year with hens and I plan on using sand from spring till fall then switching over to pine shavings for the winter. I also think I'll just keep the sand in and load up on the pine every couple weeks till there is a thick layer. Once spring rolls around and it is consistently in the 40s at night I'll do a good cleaning and put new sand in.
