Has anyone here ordered any of the assorted chickens, ducks or geese from Sandhill? The price is considerably cheaper than buying specific breed birds. Were you happy with what you got?
Several years ago I ordered the standard chicken special. I think for a hatchery they have very nice birds. But it was a real assortment, like, 1 of each breed. If you are looking for not so assorted, order the Autumn special.
Their Autumn specials are offered after everything slows down. Some breeds are more inclined to keep laying in the fall, so, you should get less of a selection. I got some standard Cochins that I really really liked. I had been hoping for some, but it's really just the luck of the draw.
I have ordered their assortments in three batches I had ordered.
You will get anything in that catalog, some will lay better than others but rarely you will get more rare breeds like orpingtons because they sell out fast. I usually order half of the box of the breeds I want and then fill the remaining ones with assortment chicks.
Most of the orders I had were mostly Polishes, Australorps, and four Red Sussex for rare breed. They were all nice but dont expect some exotic or rarest breeds like the Black and Blue Orps and Giants, some of the white eggers like Spitzhaubens, Blue Hamburgs and Manx Rumpies.
If Blue, Black Orpingtons are what you are looking for, then you must put your order in ASAP because there is a long waiting list for it and I know that the Blue Giants are sold out for the 2008 year.
Some of us breeders do have a flock and if you are lucky you can get some chicks or hatching eggs from them. Sorry I do not have any hatching eggs or chicks at this moment.
Thanks so much!! I don't know how close I am to ordering from there, but it is nice to know and will keep the things you mentioned in mind. Yes I would love to have some of the blue Orps and Giants.
