Sanford, NC family fined $1300 day for chickens!Update She Found US!!!

Send that whole letter to multiple news stations. I agree, this man just turned it into a racial issue.

If it takes at least two police officers to "enforce" these ordinances, then how many does it take to go around and tell people they cannot have chickens?!?!?

What further upsets me is that he has "made up his mind. Regardless of other opinions." That sounds like a closed-minded, racist to me.

Sorry to hear about this letter. I agree with everyone else, get that letter circulating.

Yes, I think that the news stations need to hear about his racist remark.

I would see if you have a local Hispanic rights organization or another anti-discrimination organization that would be willing to take this up.

He will be forced to vote "yes" to you to prove he's not a racist.

EDIT: Here's the iReport http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-42025 Send it to everyone you know (so it gets more hits), rate it, and add comments! Get CNN's attention by making it popular!

If any of you have FACEBOOK, you may notice that there is a group entitled "Chickens are fantastic pets!"

I just joined their group and added the following post to their message board.

Alex Reid is a mother in Sanford, N.C., who is currently fighting her city council. They want to fine her $1,300 a day because they have recently discovered she keeps chickens as pets on her (large, suburban) property. Here's the original story: http://www.wral.com/news/local/video/3119539/

Members
of the backyardchickens.com message board community are doing all they can to support Alex Reid and her fight to keep her birds.

If you would like to help, here are a few easy things you can do online:

Vote for her story on WRAL (their local news) to make it the top story of the day: http://www.wral.com/golo/page/1896337/?id=3119125

Vote
in favor of backyard chickens on the Sanford Herald web site: http://www.pulsepoll.com/scripts/mgwms32.dll

Vote
for her iReport on CNN.com to get it some national news attention: http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-42025

E-mail
the Sanford City Council with your thoughts about why chickens make great pets (keep it civil and educated): [email protected]

Post in this thread the ways you have supported Alex! Thank you so much in advance for your help!

Never underestimate the power of online social networking. Web 2.0... Bwa ha ha ha ha ha ha...

I've added my original post to several other Facebook groups supporting chickens. If anything, you'll get more hits. I've reached 1,600 people in 15 minutes thanks to Facebook.

Hi! My name is Christina, and I am writing you in regard to a story I read on the news about a lady in your city who is currently keeping chickens. It is my understanding that keeping chickens within city limits is against your code, although she has had these chickens for a very long time. She has proposed several ideas and regulations that would permit people to keep chickens within city limits, including the requirement for the chicken coop to be clean and entirely enclosed and to be located on a certain amount of land at least 50 feet from any home or residence. Despite her efforts and the reasonable regulations she proposed, your city is not considering allowing a change in city code to include keeping chickens. One of your reasons is based on the 'smell' that chickens allegedly cause. Another reason, given by one of your city council members, is that allowing chickens will cause the large number of Hispanic people in your city to begin raising chickens. I do not see any justification for either reason.
I own chickens on less that 1/2 acre, and I, too, was worried about the smell I had heard chickens cause. However, after raising a flock of more than 20 birds, I have discovered that, if cared for correctly, there IS NO SMELL. No ammonia odor, no stench, not even flies. Mind you, it is JULY! Summertime! When kept dry, the inside of a chicken coop will have virtually no odor at all. Dry litter (bedding) and lots of air flow causes the feces to dry up, eliminating the ammonia smell and attraction of flies. I just went outside (it's 4:00pm on a hot July day) and there were only a handful of flies buzzing through my coop, no more than you would encounter just being outside in general. Dry coop equals NO SMELL. Since backyard chicken owners take more time caring for their chickens, ODOR IS NOT SOMETHING TO WORRY ABOUT.
As far as the concern about Hispanic people, I think this is a racial and derogatory comment that has no place in any educated and professional environment, and I believe that people in any city should be able to address their issues with their city council and not have an excuse given to them that involves racial cliches. If a Hispanic person wants to raise chickens, and they have the property and means to comply with the acreage and distance regulations, they should be allowed to. The thought that all Hispanic people will want to raise chickens just because they're Hispanic is ridiculous!
I think the ideas proposed by Alex Reid are reasonable, and raising chickens not only helps cut down on costs (eggs, meat, etc) but helps children - and adults - become more aware of food animals and learn how to responsibly care for and respect such animals. Raising chickens is a good thing, and more people should do it!

LET ALEX REID KEEP HER CHICKENS!!!!

Alex, is Joanna willing to come forward and be named? Because unless she is, the info about that councilman and his attitude towards hispanics is pure heresay. While I totally agree and wish you good luck in your quest, be very careful, you don't want any libel or slander charges to muddy up the waters here.

I have not heard back from Joanna. But I have contacted Que Pasa news and will contact Univision. I have called the board of elections and found out that there are only 370 registered city hispanic voters. Hold off for now, please, on letters regarding the possible race issue until I get a little more clarification.

Keep up the votes on SanfordHerald.com and Wral and the ivideo that will keep them interested. Keep calling and email city council with all the other facts. Thanks gang. Alex
