sanitize the run

I'd be thankful for ideas on how to sanitize a sandy chicken/quail run. I clean it twice a day. But as you know, there are all the little and tiny parts of the feces that can't be picked up. I'd like to sanitize the whole run a couple of times a year.

Hydrated lime might work. It raises the pH and that kills some bacterias. Please do some research before you use it.

I do sprinkle a little bit of oyster flour onto the sand every couple of months to prevent it from smelling. I'm looking for something like a bigger and more thorough spring cleaning.

Do they spend all their time in there? How many birds are in it?
