Sapphire Gem thread!!!!

Basically you claim an egg number and you name it according to the theme, then you "root" for that egg to hatch basically, and when/if it hatches the chick will be called what you name it! Apparently all the sapphire gem eggs are taken now. Eggs 2, 10, 18, 19, 20, and 21 are available!
That sounds fun! I’ll check it out!

Hey guys! Cool thread. I'm trying to find out what breed this chicken is, Pinky our blind hen (see pics). I was told somewhere that she is a Sapphire Gem, someone else said she's a Leghorn mix... just curious if you could ID her?

He is like the sweetest boy, he lets me pick him up. But apparently sometimes when he's calling his girls over saying that he found food, sometimes it isn't food. Sometimes he tells his girls to eat a wood chip, a piece of bird poop, etc.

Yes, he and Gert produced another sapphire gem. Their offspring were actually sex-linked as well!
I can’t stop laughing, and now I need to meet Ledo. 😁😆

I have a question about them. Wouldn’t they still be a pure breed, just a combination of 2 colors? I feel like I am missing something obvious lol

I don’t think so because they don’t breed true 100% of the time. As in when you breed two sapphire gems together you won’t always get sapphire gem offspring.

Here in post number two, there is a great explanation of this.

Have you tried posting a thread in the breed identification section on her? Some more pictures could help, too. She may just be a barnyard mix. Look up breeds with tufts of hair feathers on their heads, that might give you some clues :)

1. How long have you been owning sapphire gems for?
3 years

2. What would you rate them on a scale through 1-10 and why?
7. frostbite, dainty size.

3. What's your favorite "trait" of your sapphire gem(s)? (e.g. their egg laying, their temperament, etc.)
3 year old hens are strong layers. Really patient with kids.

4. What do you keep them for? Dual-purpose? Eggs? Meat? Pets? For pets and eggs?
That’s what was in the bucket at tsc lol

5. Would you recommend this breed to other chicken keepers?
Yes

6. How many sapphire gems do you have?
3

7. Would you consider getting more in the future? Why or why not?
probably not, any straight comb gets frozen off around here. But they are very cold hardy otherwise.

Edit: spelling

Isn't it funny how one breed can come in different sizes?? My two adult sapphire gems are huge (very stocky) and their daughter is very skinny and has thin legs. Yes they are definitely susceptible to frostbite, Ledo got frostbite last Winter on the tips of his comb, as did Gert, but their daughter Opal got it the worst! We had to take her inside it was that bad. It was swelled up bad!
