My sapphire gems are about 3 weeks old. We got both at the same time and they looked almost identical. Now both look very different, one is way more feathered than the other, one has a tail and one has none. Do you think one is a cockerel?

Sapphire Gems are sex linked at hatch.

Males should have a white head dot while females will be solid.

Blues can be a little trickier as sometimes the lighter grey coloring obscures a white head dot.

I wouldn't go by feather or growth development if you got them from a feedstore which got them from a hatchery. Shipments can have different ages of chicks, and the bins definitely do.

Also, these are hybrids which means they will have variations to growth patterns.

However, they *should* be sex linked by white head dot for males (showing barring to come in males) and solid color for females as they are a classic barred hen over solid rooster, only using a blue base background.

I'm not seeing any head dots, so you should be okay.

However, if you see bars developing on one of them, it is male.

It’s pullets, though the lighter color might have a chance to be male. I got 3 of those SG last Spring and they all turned out pullets even the lighter ones. I was on couple of threads discussing about the male-female traits of this new hybrid since I was scared to have another roo to get rid off. So far I’m pretty happy with my large egg layers and they are friendly chickens.
