Satellite Internet,..Is it worth it??

Living where we do~~~in the NC mountains~~we really didn't have a choice. I have Hughesnet and I hate it. If there's a problem---as there frequently is---all customer service is handled out of the country.....no way to ever talk with an American who speaks REAL english.

if you are in an area that has good cell service, you may think of getting a wireless card though ATT or Verizon. I have found the service much more reliable then Wild Blue. It is also much faster then dail up.

True about Hughesnet and the out of the country help.

However, after a year with ATT air card and the tower is only a mile from my house I was relieved to have Hughesnet back.

Here is the deal with it however......if you have ANY of the older modem thingys UPGRADE. When I married my husband he had Hughesnet and had it for years. We live out in the country so there were not really any other options. I hated it. It was always down. Storms would affect it. Even when the dish was working on the tv.

Now we have Hughesnet once again and it has been great with the new equipment. Plus we had the dish taken off the roof for both services and I believe that they both work better. But the new tower I have for my Hughesnet is working great. Much better than the one I had before. AND we did not buy this time we are leasing it.....that way we can upgrade as we need to!!

I hate it when you get their help line on and have to wait forever only to get someone who does not speak good enough english to understand them. I love an accent but these guys are awful. Another case of a large company outsourcing when if they used someone in the US they would be able to give much better customer service.

I am out of the middle of a cornfield, my option is dialup or Speednet ( satellite service like WildBlue or Hughesnet ). The service cannot compare to dsl or cable modem. However, it beats dialup, IMHO. The weather does make it go down, but my dialup was not very reliable either. I had tried going through Verizon Wireless and bought their modem but it was no better and slightly worse service than Speednet for me. So, I suck it up and pay 60.00 a month for Speednet since they are the only provider in my area other than dialup. Unless I move into town, which I think is very unlikely, so is my lot in life...LOL

Oh, and Speednet is based in Omaha, Nebraska...that is where their call center is. Believe me, I know their number.

Being in the mountains here in WV we don't have little to no cell phone reception, even though there is a tower on the mountain behind our house,..it bounces over us leaving us in a dead spot. As I said the reception with satellite TV was bad too,...southern sky is hard to see...

too many mountains. I believe I will stay with dial-up,..for the price and aggrivation compared to satellite internet,..dial-up is better. My dial-up is at least reliable,..just slow as molasses on a cold morning.

Thanks all!

I am literally 1,000 feet past the drop for DSL, and cannot get it. I refuse to get cable TV or phone or Internet. I have DirecTv and HughesNet. The picture on my tv pixilates in bad weather, but the Internet signal is much better. I like both services.

Yah, pricey, but to me, worth it.

All we can get where i live is regular dial up internet. there are too many hills around.
