I had just woken up from my nap, and it was around 5. i went out and started getting the ducks ready for bed. they were happily swimming in the pond and i was watching them and smiling and laughing at them. when suddenly i saw a dark animal running around the edge of the pond. at first, i thought it was my cat rascal, then i remembered he was asleep on the couch with me and was still asleep when i left. he would not have been able to get past me and down to the pond, or even out the door for that matter. i dropped the gallons of water i was carrying and started running. i noticed it was walking funny, almost like the beaver we had last year, but it was skinny with a fuzzy tail. most of the pond was covered in ice, so the thing couldve gotten to them possibly, and looked like he was trying. i was in momma bear mode and went sprinting down to the pond. he heard me coming and took off across the street into the thick swamp land. i didn't hesitate and i followed the little stinker. soon he was out of site and i returned to my duckies and they were safe and sound. after getting them to bed and searching for hours for my phone (it fell out while i was running, we never found it) i researched fisher cats and watched some videos to see how they move. and i strongly believe it was a fisher cat. it had the weasel kind of walk, but it was much bigger than normal. dang thing. i wanna kill it sooo bad. my dad thinks he saw it again outside the house because something ran by him and he thought it was rascal our cat. he came in and asked if i had just let rascal in, but rascal had been inside this whole time. im still in momma bear mode lol. the things ive chases outta my yard...oh boy. im nuts lol

On the news last night, there was a story about them being reintroduced into the Olympic National Forest here in Wa state.

I wouldn't just kill it; how about trap it and set it free?

I'm sure it's cold out and it's hungry. I've seen more cats and ducks than a fisher cat.

We had a flock of birds (red jungle fowl) two years ago get wiped out by a Momma Bobcat and her starving baby kits (they looked really bad).
Not her fault for trying to save her babies. I'm sure there are MORE chickens out there than Bobcats.
It was a sad story, but we just shooed them away and left them deer leavings and we never had anymore issues with them.

We leave deer guts and everything we don't use on the end of the land and although we have coyotes, badgers, coons, skunks and possoms, we have yet to lose a chicken to one.
Heck, we even had coyotes running around the yard; have not lost a hen for the past 2 years we've had birds here.
Sometimes I'm forgetful and leave the cage door opened (unlatched).

As for your cat, watch out for him/her. The predator is just doing what is natural to him/hePr

We have pine martens, very similar, and we can't harm them or even capture them because we are in a protection zone.
I know it's very difficult when you have ducks, but be sure to check your state regulations before dealing with this animal.
It can be very frustrating, but in many places, like ours, you have to confine the poultry or waterfown, leaving the mammal alone.

I like your approach of feeding them, but I'm worried that in the end wouldn't it just create more predators? I've thought of doing that with the hawk predators we have, but I'm afraid to even mention it to people, because people will think I'm crazier than I am. Should I try to feed them? I know people who have done that with deer and had things go very ,very wrong, as it would cost you 1000's to feed a flock every year. . .
