Sawdust in coop

Construction sand may be too fine, but, yes, you could just put it in a bowl or tray on the floor, or toss it into their run.

Gravel is not the same as grit...
...unless you live in Maine where there's lots of natural granite ;).

I have used a colander with ~1/8" holes to sift finer stuff out the the 'adult' grit.

Missouri is a giant granite rock with one place that has purple granite... only two places in USA have purple granite that I know of. My pullets have never touched the bowl grit I put in the run when I moved them in.

Certainly just letting them pick at the natural grit in the run would be sufficiant without having to buy grit from a store, No?

That would depend on your location if there is any natural grit in the run or not. Just 100' to the east of my chicken yard the dirt is so deep I can't find the bottom with my backhoe and not much grit to be found...
