Saxony Duck Thread!

Pics
Looking to do an egg swap with another Saxony keeper. Introduce new blood to each others flocks AND conduct an egg shipping experiment. Must be in the US and not at risk of sending mixed breed eggs.

Hi, maybe you can help me. I bought my ducks as ducklings in March, thinking they were all Peking. The girl became brown and I think she is a Saxony (see pic). Anyone confirm that for me please? She also has had babies with our Pekin Drake, they are a week old

Not sure how you got Buff out of that...She looks like a Fawn and White Runner Mix. Must have some Magpie or Ancona in there somewhere hence the ducklings down color.

Well, your duck does look very much like a Saxony, but I can't be sure. Usually, she would have a white streak across her eyes, and her usually the white in her beck isn't all the way around and isn't as completely covered as yours. Try waiting a bit longer and see if anything changes. Is she cross bred with something else?

Hey I got four saxonies just before this thread was started but I didn't have an account back then. I've finally bit the bullet and made one and here I am! One from when they were little.. The boys(Peter and Jan, I named them all german names) eating sunflower seeds from my hand... My favorite duck Heidi. The boys and my other girl Gertrude. Being mobbed by chickens... Heidi sitting on my lap. I just love her. The boys just got their curly tail feathers last week so they are all growed up now! Now I just am waiting on the eggs:pop Hope ya'll like the pics! .
Oh my, another fun thread to follow. I love your saxonies. Heidi on your lap. Such a sweet little face.

Hey guys! I'm having some problems with my Saxony drake. He's about three and has developed angel wing. The female doesn't have it though. He always gets wet when he swims and I fear he has Wet Feather disease. What should I do, and what's wrong with him? :( He doesn't really like to walk, and has patchy plumage...

Hello Saxony lovers!
Glad you stared this dot, our birds are definitely underappreciated and I love to see others with them!
I would post recent photos of my gang but they're molting and look pretty unkempt at the moment. lol
Good news though, we have fertile eggs and will have babies this spring!! Yay!

Yay! I've got babies hatching this weekend plus some 4 week olds that I'm ready to evict from the house.

I'm sorry to hear that! I believe angel wing is caused by too much protein in the diet, and wet feather can from a lack of swim time (though I believe there are other causes too.) I hope de's doing better.

Cool! :) Congratulations!
There's nothing cuter than ducklings..well, maybe puppies. lol
I found an icy cold egg outside of the nest yesterday so I cracked it open and there was a 8 or 9 day old baby in it. I figured it'd died at that age, but when I candled the rest of them they were all about that size and moving around so I may have killed one. My bad.
Do you know how long they can be cold before the duckling inside dies, because I do not.
Anyway, after all this I realized the the hens didn't start sitting on the eggs until a week after they were laid so my numbers were off and all is good.
I also have 4 Toulouse goslings on order for the 24th so I'll have babies galore pretty soon.
I hope I'm able to keep them all safe and happy. :)
We need to discuss trading eggs.

If that egg was cold to the touch I'd think it was too cold for the duckling to have survived. I don't know that it's a matter of how long, as much as it is a matter of how low the temperature gets. This also may matter more at different times in incubation.

I'd think that once you start to drop the egg temp below 80° there could be issues, though that's just my guess and has not been tested by myself.

Yay! Someone to do an egg swap!
