Little b@stard was waiting just inside the shed. We have found so many rattlesnakes in the shed I always look before I step in. But this is the first rattler we have found in a couple of years. He was maybe two foot, 4 rattles.
Scary!! We had a bull snake or something near our coop, let me see if I can find the pic...
ETA: Sorry can't find the pic, but the snake was 3 or 4 feet long! Scared the living daylights out of me.
I am so deathly afraid of a snake, I can't even get close enough to kill them!!! I just freeze in place. Can't talk, can't move. It's awful!
I say the only good snake, is a DEAD one!!
My neighbor had a snake in an aquarium near my horse's fence. I asked over the weekend what happened to it, as my horses were scared of it as well. Come to find out, it was a COPPERHEAD, and she said her son killed it. I'm thinking he let that !))@#$(*&$#@ thing go, and it will be soon at my house!! I can't imagine him letting it go after going through the trouble of catching it and putting it in an aquarium. I'm scared to go outside now!

We have never had a copperhead around our place but they are around. I think they prefer sandier soil than our black clay.
The only snake I haven't killed is the yellow bellied racer that is just too fast to catch! ...and so far he hasn't bothered the chickens although he did run through the chicken yard the other day when I was sitting out there. The chicken chased him which is probably why he was double-timing it! It's at night when they can't see the snake that the chickens are usually attacked.
One less rattlesnake....it's a good thing.
ETA: Sorry VA is just too far away!
I was in Springfield where my sister lives...and if we ever go back to that lodge in the Shenandoah's I'll look you up for some snake killing !!
..hmmm, sulphur is good for chiggers too! But I'm not sure about the cedar shavings because I've read that they are not good for chickens. Maybe I'll put them only in the nest boxes since the chickens spend less time there.
Most of my silly chickens still do not roost even at 4 months old! They just dig themselves down into the deep shavings on the floor.
