Hate to scare you but all spiders are venomous. The reaction to their bites varies from person to person. Also the length of their fangs varies. So, while most folks react to the two you mentioned...anyone could react to others and some just don't have the umpf to kill you!

yup yup. the most deadly 1 in the us is the daddy long legs but his jaws aree too small to bite skin. but emzyyy you forgot about tarantulas. i know a guy who lost a chunk of skin to a tarantula bite thaqt got infecvted

the snakes you have to worry about getting your birds fall into the constrictor type (Colubrid) and are egg eaters. bull snakes coachwhips rat snakes and the ever ominous chicken snake are the common chicken and chick killers. garter snakes and graass snakes eat bugs and other small items. heres a bit of advice for keeping snakes away from your chickens. if you have a snake lurking about hes probably looking for mice so be sure to keep your mouse population in check as well. i use a repeating mouse trap because im one of the crazy folks who keeps reptiles so i quote The Rock and say "just bring it" to the mice rat snakes and corn snakes lol. my python will eat them all.

Thanks for snake education dave! I have never seen anything other than garter, but I will be aware...just in case!

Crockett's a little further east...maybe three hours?

My Wellies are from Xtreme. Unfortunately, they have not been great quality. I was hoping for a local hatchery but in comparison the chicks I ordered from McMurray have seemed much more....robust. I do think that I got one good Welsummer roo from them....and maybe a pullet, too.

One of my co-workers ordered about 50 chicks of various breeds from them and I haven't heard him complain. He only said that it looks like a "backyard setup" to him and the woman mentioned getting her eggs or chicks from another breeder.

i havent been there in perrson only got my birds through them. i do know my last order was drop shipped from mt healthy hatcheries but i hadf 2 orders from them and got great birds. i try to spread tghe wealth becauase i get from ideal first of the year and xtreme the rest. i sometimes use randall burkey but they are proud of their birds, only good value they have are on popular birds lijke barred rocks and reds but only if you buy the 100 count. luckily i sell 200-300 a week so anytime i get them i sell them quick. and yeah im about 2-21/2 hrs away. were 70 miles east of b/cs. i used to live in san marcos and i used to drive all over that way. such beautiful country

oh my welsummers are ideal stock. they are good birds but the roosters dont amount to much. i butchered a few a while back and looking back it really wasnt worth the time. its a very lean bird beneath those feathers but i love those dark brown eggs yum.

We just had three Maran roos and one Welsummer roo processed and the poor Wellie looks sooooo skinny! I think I have no choice but to boil him and pick his little bones clean!

Here's a small piece about the Daddy Long Legs from University of California/Riverside

Daddy-longlegs (Opiliones) - these arachnids make their living by eating decomposing vegetative and animal matter although are opportunist predators if they can get away with it. They do not have venom glands, fangs or any other mechanism for chemically subduing their food. Therefore, they do not have poison and, by the powers of logic, cannot be poisonous from venom. Some have defensive secretions that might be poisonous to small animals if ingested. So, for these daddy-long-legs, the tale is clearly false.

Daddy-longlegs spiders (Pholcidae) - Here, the myth is incorrect at least in making claims that have no basis in known facts. There is no reference to any pholcid spider biting a human and causing any detrimental reaction. If these spiders were indeed deadly poisonous but couldn't bite humans, then the only way we would know that they are poisonous is by milking them and injecting the venom into humans. For a variety of reasons including Amnesty International and a humanitarian code of ethics, this research has never been done. Furthermore, there are no toxicological studies testing the lethality of pholcid venom on any mammalian system (this is usually done with mice). Therefore, no information is available on the likely toxic effects of their venom in humans, so the part of the myth about their being especially poisonous is just that: a myth. There is no scientific basis for the supposition that they are deadly poisonous and there is no reason to assume that it is true.

Tammy, did you skin the coontail and fry it up?
Plus are you saving the skin? It'll make a nice hat band.

Aaaahhhh, OK so this is why here in Southwestern NH the garter snake is the most common snake. In CT there are sightings of rattlers but rarely, I have heard of sightings here in NH, but would imagine it is pretty uncommon.

I think I would probably always carry a gun and hope I was a good shot living in your area.

I have cedar shavings in my nest boxes.

My DH was bitten by a pygmy rattler a few weeks back, long story short was a 2 day visit in the hospital. THE day he got out he had to kill 2 chicken snakes that were eating eggs. After that not knowing that cedar would help to keep snakes away I put the shavings into the grow out pen and in the nest boxes. YEAAAAAAAAAAA. Have not seen a snake since. Spiders and Snakes that AINT what it takes.
