I just want to thank the members for their posts... I found them both interesting and many of them very informative!!! I finally joined after a few months of browsing. I just recieved 19 beautiful babies 2 days ago and we are doing well so far :) chickens are new to me but birds are not. My first experience with these new young ones is that eat a lot!!! Totally enjoying the adventure. Lastly, at night when the sun goes down... I see a red light in my kitchen and you can hear a pin drop. These chicks have some presence about them. I can't explain it but I'm sure most of you know what I'm talking about. It's like putting babies to bed

Welcome & Congratulations!

I agree that they all have wonderful and individual chickenalities .... I still tuck my girls, ranging in age from 4 to 2 years, into bed every night and ensure they are all comfortable on the roost and break up any squabbles for the best spot

Hi George welcome to BYC,

With 19 chicks your going to have your hands full in no time at all. What breeds did you end up getting? Have you started with building a coop yet and a run for them to get out into as soon as they are big enough. They will start trying to fly in about 2 to 3 weeks. So make sure you have a safe place for them or make a big enough lid for your brooder they are in. Also while your building things a few perches that are lower to the ground and a few higher ones you may also want to make for them to play on. You can cut a few 2x4's into block pieces and place them inside to. Place a small ball inside to give them some distractions as they get older so they don't end up picking on each other. Hope these tips help. Best of luck with your new flock.
