Sayin hi from upstate ny

Thank you much cntry1958. Great advice re the coop . I'm actually building it this week. Prob 12x12. With perches :)
The chick are doing great, I'm learning every day. They are eating a lot though which is great ... more than I expected as young ones(laughing) . I put a bigger open pan of water which is cleaned 10 times a day. I'm sorry I got rid of all my water bottles and water feeders for the pigeons because now I could use them . Monday I'm going to get a water feeder actually two feeders because I know that now they'll find the water ok . I'm keeping them in a 2 foot ,hundred gallon horse water tub from tsc. I'm glad I save that one ..It came in handy .
From a hetchery I ordered
3 Delaware pullets
3 road island reds "
3 buff Orpington "
3 black sex link "
3 jersey giants "
1 buff Orpington cockerel
However I think one of my Rhode Island Reds is going to be a rooster ....) and possibly one of the Delaware's .....) lol
Every day I'm learning something new . The checks and daddy are doing fine and healthy so all is good here . Right now they're in my kitchen but they will be moved outside . It's still cold up here in the north east Days are nice but it's still chilly and these birds not ready to go outside yet .
I think you're right about putting a net over the brooder. They are only five days old and they're jumping so another week or two I could see them trying to fly . It's going good and thank you for all the warm welcomes ( you and the forum).
Have a great weekend!!!

Ps I have 3 extra chicks that I forgot to add in. The hatchery gave me three extra ... 19 all together

We just love them free chicks ha ha ha ha don't we as long as they turn out to be hens. I am here in Maryland so our weather is very similar to each others. Raining here and over cast today and cool again.

You picked some great breeds of chickens. Can't wait to see pictures as they grow older.

You know you made me think... the ball in the coop and keeping them busy raised a bulb in my head.. thank you. You are right!!! Also you made me think of adding a 4x8 small side coop attached to the 12x12 for sick birds, breeding, young chicks etc....
While I'm building I might as well do all the construction now. Thank you for that advice.
I picked these chicks for eggs and beauty to my eye. I know they are hatchery chicks but sometimes you may get a few beauties. When I see what I have then I'll start breeding. I originally wanted a dozen chicks, but sometimes things happen to them. I was more afraid of them getting cold and dying . I'm a new starter. All is well. These are pets for now and I'm getting my feet wet. I saw meat birds being sold at tsc but the idea of an oversized breed that some have trouble standing didn't sit right with me. Just tossing out things I'm thinking about. The birds got much bigger fast since Tuesday. Water is being replaced more frequently. The feed starter is good for now but I can see that I'm already thinking of future grain feed. I'm sure the feeds have changed over the years. So I'll see what feeds they have at the livestock supply store and then I'll make my decision. But for now they are doing well and I think they are going to stay on this feed for a few more weeks. I'm planning on adding grain with this starter feed little at a time and getting their systems use to it. That won't be for a while. They are growing rapidly :) I appreciate your input
Thanks again

Chicks grow so darn fast its like you can go in the other room come back and they are a wee bit bigger and you know its impossible but they are growing before our eyes. They can begin laying eggs are 5 months and are grown up by then. Its amazing to me just how fast they do grow. One day they just chasing things around next day flying out of the brooder onto your shoulder or arm.

I am glad I could give you a few ideas that helped you. Can't wait to see the coop and run as well as the new smaller coop for the sick ones. Sounds like you will have a nice project for the next few weekends ahead of you. Take lots of pictures we all love seeing them.

Take Care and have a wonderful weekend.

welcome! Once they get a little bigger they can really pig out and cause that feed bill to go up haha... where in upstate ny are you? I'm in the Hudson valley over by west point. Welcome to BYC!

Hi Hillaire
They are eating big time:) I'm amazed how much they eat and drink. One of my Delaware's was having poop built up under the tail . I cleaned her off yesterday with warm water ,cleaned around the area and she seems to be doing fine ...nothing is sticking . These chicks are really healthy and the feed is doing very good for them , I have them on starter feed ! I thought I'd have a problem being a first timer but so far so good so I'm keeping my fingers crossed . I'm actually in deleware county ny. I left the city to get my hands dirty and I'm loving it. I'm new to homesteading. I'm enjoying the country... it's just me , my rescue and 19 chicks. Most can't believe I made this change... but I did and I shocked everyone :)
Ps I'm learning fast
Between the bird feeders and working/setting up my land.... I have a deep respect for farmers/ country folk
