Saying good by to my little buddy.

Well I’m saying good by to my little buddy, and permanently lending him out to a friend, to look over his small flock of four hens that are about one year old. He has a Dachshund (wiener-dog) that will not leave his free range hens alone. When the dog is out side, it chases and torments the hens continuously. And when they bought some chicks this spring, it killed all of them. So my Rooster has a job ahead of him to set this little dog straight. It’ll be interesting just how it works out with my Rooster and the hens (the hens never even seen a Rooster before) And once he establishes rank with the hens, and makes them his, how he’ll protect them from the little dog. He’s a big boy, so he should have no trouble.





For size wise, here he is next to a Bantam Rooster (his replacement)


He doesn't seem to like the new guy, that is going to be taking over his turf....LOL

I hate to say it but even a nice, big roo like him may not be a match for that stinkin' Dachshund! Especially if it's a standard size Doxie. They are relentless, he probably runs those poor birds ragged. I doubt it will be long before that dog graduates to killing them. Too bad the owner isn't more willing to take control of his dog instead of letting it torment his birds. It would be great if your roo could teach that dog some manners but there's only so much one bird can do.

He's a big 'un for sure! But, honestly, the chickens need to be housed away from the dog. A determined doxie will kill a rooster with no trouble.

Doxies Are relentless, no doubt. Its their instinct and breeding, doesnt make em bad dogs, but not something its owners gonna train out of it.
Luckily, thhey are often also big chickens ( pardon the expression)
especially the minis. So a good lesson from the rooster Might scare the dog off, but most likely the dog and the chickens need to be kept apart. We have to do that here, even though my dog is used to being always with me. She Usually ignores the chickens, but if the mood strikes her, its over in a flash.

My money is on the rooster, over the doxie one on one,
But it would be terrible if it came to that.
Even if rooster (Such a handsome guy btw) can just call the dogs bluff W/O
Bloodshed or vetbills, doxie will just find sneakier way to get the chicks.
OR, mmaybe it will work put perfectly!!

I dropped him off today. I'll give it a few days and ask how the transition to his new diggs are working out. I told him to keep the Rooster in the coop for a few days before letting him roam the property. That way he knows where the food and water is located at, and can establish a new home base.

They sure do grow. Here he is as a young'n.
