Today I noticed that our roo and a couple of hens had tiny black spots on their combs - the roo more so. Picked him up and examined and figured out they are scabs. I would assume that something is biting them. Tried to see if there was many mites on them but couldn't see anything. Anyone have any thoughts of what this might be? Can take pictures if that would help.

Sounds like just normal bruises and dried blood from banging around in the chicken yard. Black spots that aren't raised or pus-filled looking, correct?

Yes, they are just dried blood spots.

Normal. My rooster gets them more than the hens, but I do see them on the hens from time to time.

It *could* be the beginning of "dry" fowl pox. My chickens started it with tiny black spots on their combs. It is spread by mosquitoes. As long as they don't get the "wet" type (which causes lesions to appear inside their throat and windpipe) fowl pox usually isn't dangerous.

Were the tiny spots actual scabs. I picked one off and it started to bleed a tiny bit. Were your spots like that or were they just spots. How did you treat your chickens or was it the dry type?
