Scalders

I like the trash can idea....

I typically run my domestic hot water heater high at about 135 so i used hot tap water to fill my turkey fryer which ment i only had to boost it to 150deg which didnt take but a few min.

same could be done with the trash can with a five gallon bucket out of the tub. (remember your domestic hot water heater is usually 40+ gal)

Ive got an older gas water heater that i was going to convert to a scalder complete with built in temp sensor.

you could get lucky off of craigslist with a gas one if someone is converting to electric.

if you dont like the trash can due to the galvanized sides perhaps a new clean metal 55 gall drum (no galv on those) cut down to 30 ish gal (about half) You can also use a piece of plate steel under the barrel/trash can to avoid direct flame contact with the drum/can.

That's what I used the last time we butchered. Worked great. It took about an hour to heat up, but once it got to temp is helded constant with very little flame. I actually shut it off for awhile.

As this is an old post, I think Jaku has since made his own Whizband inspired scalder. I remember seeing a picture of it. Looked pretty cool, but it took some engineering.

Can you repost the pic or the link Jaku? I would like to make one as well if I can figure it out. I found a source for old HWHs.

We have the Renai (sp?) hot water heater, which is an on demand gas fired hot water heater. We can dial it up to 145, get our water, dial it back down, and start scalding. Try that for the initial water. We also have exterior hot water spigots as well on the house.
