I like the trash can idea....
I typically run my domestic hot water heater high at about 135 so i used hot tap water to fill my turkey fryer which ment i only had to boost it to 150deg which didnt take but a few min.
same could be done with the trash can with a five gallon bucket out of the tub. (remember your domestic hot water heater is usually 40+ gal)
Ive got an older gas water heater that i was going to convert to a scalder complete with built in temp sensor.
you could get lucky off of craigslist with a gas one if someone is converting to electric.
if you dont like the trash can due to the galvanized sides perhaps a new clean metal 55 gall drum (no galv on those) cut down to 30 ish gal (about half) You can also use a piece of plate steel under the barrel/trash can to avoid direct flame contact with the drum/can.
