I have been waiting for someone to throw out an old gas water heater, then I hope to remove the top and make it smaller and connect it to an old propane fitting so I can use that.

I have had the can for about 1 year, I think it is about a 20-30 gal
I fill it up a little over 1/2 full and as the water gets dirty I just dip the floating dirt and grass off the top. The can doesn't get hot enough to burn the coating off at 150 deg. has not rusted yet. It does take a little longer to heat up, about 30 mins. I just start it first while I set up cutting tables and work area. Its nice if you are doing a larger number of birds. I use a small Galv. Ash bucket for 1-5 birds. The Turkey fryer I have you just adjust the flame size to low after you are to temp.
Works great!

We have two the turkey fryer we use for most chickens, the larger one we use for turkeys. The heater for the large one is from our multi purpose smoker.

The small one take about 20 to 30 minutes to heat. The larger one about 30 to 45 minutes.

The USDA recomends not using any galvenized metal in meat processing. must most Guides on Poultry processing do.

I would not worry about using galv cans for scalding.. as long as you are doing it outside where it is really well ventilated..

another vessel that I think would work super well would be a metal 55 gal barrel cut down to about 30 gal.. I would burn the inside to remove any paint or other residue

It would get really rusty, but that would not be a problem for scalding,I don't believe..

I bought a galvanized trash can for a scalder but now i'm nervous about poison,did you heat it up first or do anything to help get rid of some of the poison before using it?

I have 29 cornish x coming on june 1st. This will be my first time at raising and processing meaties. I have an old hot tub that needs a new cover and I can't give it away. I was wondering about using the heater and such to make some sort of electric heated scolder. Just kicking around some ideas.

Rub galvanized steel and you will rub off lead and other metalic poison,that's what I worry about getting in the water! start our harvest around monday cx's are 8 weeks then, from what I read on here that's about time for them..Have to figure this out!
