So my poor bantam pullets are Infected with scaley leg mites. Some worse then others. Most of them have feather legs and feet so I didn’t notice right away. I’m very new to chickens.
Do I need to burn their bedding and deep clean their coop for scaley leg mites? My coop is pretty small. I just cleaned it last week and put all new bedding on the floor.

I’m going to start the Vaseline treatment tonight and sprinkle DE all of the coop when their not in it. I also heard mixing 1
Cup of coconut oil and 2 cups water and spraying that all over the coop helps?

Thank in advance! I really appreciate any input.

Coconut oil probably wont work, you can burn the bedding but IMO it is overkill. I would just clean the coop thoroughly.

Ok, thanks. We have a compost we put our bedding in. Would the mites be able to live in the compost if we put all the existing bedding in the compost?
Also, do u have any recommendations as to what I can spray to help prevent mites?

Permetherin will prevent them from getting on your birds. This can be found at TSC or any feed store.

Ok, we just did the Vaseline treatment but wow that was a mess and took awhile. It’s hard to know if we really got it everywhere on the ones with feathered feet! Is there an easier way? I read spraying WD40 will work good? What treatment would you do? I couldn’t imagine doing Vaseline every night for two weeks!

I just put olive oil in a little spray bottle and spray their legs/ feet. Quick and easy.

Oh that does sound a lot easier. I’m going to try that tonight. Do you do that every night for 2 weeks? Or until you see improvement?
The point of putting an oil of any kind on their legs is to suffocate the mites. Any oil will work, even used motor oil. However, it obviously is less safe.
