Scaly leg/mite question?

Oh the poor guy. His feet look just awful.
Wonderful that you are taking care of the situation. !!

How long should I keep him quarantined? I keep all my new birds, if I have seen where they came from, quarantined for a week. If I didn't, they stay for longer.

I saw her set up. It was clean, her birds all looked nice, there was some missing feathers but obvious from rooster activity.

I checked the two hens I got, and their feet look fine.

Could feet get like this from being on wire floor? She rotates hens and roosters. If they get beat up or go broody, etc. she had 3 large roosts, and several small wire bottomed cages for rotating. Could it be from that? I know he wasnt in there that much.
That looks like a pretty severe mite situation. Wire cages only serve to mess up their feet even more.

You can't keep them 100% from exposure to mites unless they are show birds, feet never touch the soil, no new birds added etc., just a brief glimpse of what that would require.

The reason you want to quarantine, some 21 days others say to 30 days, is because they may have worms..... tape, round, capalliary, gape etc, respiratory diseases, potential to introduce Marek's, cocci. etc.

It depends on your availability to monitor and be able to implement treatment and add'l quarantines, how valuable your flock is and cost to completely replace, treat your whole coop/pen/buildings and grounds etc to eliminate the problems if you do not decide to do it. You may get lucky, but, just taking them from one area/ground to another means they have to buff up their own immune system.

Something like gape worms or cocci can take them out in 72 hours easily, then on through your flock. Now that may seem over exaggerated, but, believe me. OJT is no fun, it;s expensive and it will wear you out!

He's so cute, I would give him 3 weeks, myself and watch closely after that. If you haven't already wormed your birds, do so now, all of them, him too. That way they can start off fresh together. In the end, it's your decision, but I must advise on the side of caution since he's already has a battle to deal with right now. I use Valbazen. If you would like add'l info on how/dose etc. please feel free to PM me.

Have I placed birds together without quarantine, yes, have I paid the price, yes.

That's how I know about alot of the things I mentioned above.

I know the reasons to quarantine, im a zookeeper, as well as a registered veterinary tech I Always deworm and dust new birds. And keep them seperate for atleast a week And I also dust my main flock as needed.

I was thinking about 2-3 weeks for him. Depending on how his feet look. I have him in a brooder cage right now, just isn't big enough for him for that long. But in a week when I turn out the hens, he can have the more open kennel they are in.

Sounds good...!
It always helps to note a little extra so those coming along later and read these posts will get the whole picture.

And had I not, someone would soon point it out.

Forgot about your background, meant no offense. I'm an RN but when it comes to chickens, there's alot I can't even begin to explain. Just like people, they are all different in some kind of way.

Just trying to touch base and help with those who ask a question when I can...take care and would love to see him again as he progresses.

I did a sickening amount of research with two chicken vets and way more threads on BYC that I care to admit. Had a bird come down with what presented like Merecks or Wry Neck. In researching about both of those things I learned a lot about what mites can do to your birds. :( Was a real awakening.

Still don't know what she had, but when she came down with the same symptoms a second time, I decided it was probably wry neck.

My large animal vet learned a lot about chickens as well during that research. He can thank me for that, lol.

Benefit to doing what i do, it's strengthens all my animals immune systems. I bring home so much crud on my clothes most days. Down side, well, I end up with a lot of animals to "fix". I have game mix birds all over because I felt bad for them at work, lol. I'm hoping it pays me back, read they like to go broody a lot.
