scaly leg mites?

Honestly, I've thought this bird had egg yolk peritonitis at least 4 times, and each time she magically got better. Her belly feels a little squishy, but compared to my other hen that's not sick it doesn't feel abnormally huge or squishy. There is a vet that does house calls that I've heard treats poultry in the area. If she's not better by tomorrow I'm going to call him.

Does this look like scaly leg mites? This hen is sitting a lot and fairly lethargic. I checked her over for just about everything else and I can't find anything else that looks wrong.

Yes it is.
I would recommend to
1. Treat the infected hen, as proposed
2. Replace the beding of the coop
3. Before putting the new bedding you need to sanitize the coop flore and the roosting post.
4. Give a preventive treatment to the flock.

Yes it is.
I would recommend to

I washed her legs in warm water and gentle exfoliated, then put some coconut oil and A&D ointment on them. They look a lot better, but I'm just not 100% sure that's the only issue going on. I did clean out the coop and sprayed everything down with poultry protector.

Scaly Leg Mites can cause a decline in health when severe, but I suspect something else is going on with her. EYP, cancer, tumors or some other reproductive/internal laying disorder may be be going on. Also have your vet perform a fecal float to rule out worm or cocci overload.



@MelonHeadSeb To answer your question - this is what we see in the photos that make us think she has SLM - note the dry, crusty feet and raised scales - scales should be smooth all the way down. This is not a severe case at this point, so with treatment the legs should heal nicely. As for bumblefoot - looking at the previous photos, the bottom of the feet look fine.

Do you have a dust bath that they use? I know you can mix wood ash and/or DE in with it. That might just be preventative, I'm not sure. But I deff recommend it as well as a treatment.

We made a large, deep, "sand box" for the two of them and they love it! Not only is the sand safe for chickens, but we added a lot of hardwood ash to it and mixed it all up together.

The thing that bugs me (pun intended) is that I have NEVER seen a mite on either of them ever, they act the same, eat the same, are active, lay eggs every other day at least - it's just the legs on them look horrible! It is painful for me to even look at Abby's legs.

Henrietta's not so bad yet, but there is this "mound" of dark matter close to her vent. Anyone know how to get that off of her? I'm thinking it can't just be scraped off or plucked off - it could cause pain, suffering, bleeding or infection. Any ideas on this?

This weekend I've got to do something - I am losing sleep over them at night now - not kidding.

I dont know of any sprays you can use but the medicated Vaseline is called Vaporizing Rub

When growing up my mom would put VICK'S VAPO-RUB on my chest so that when I breathed, it would help clear my sinuses...is this what you are referring to? It's dark blue, I think.
