Hello,

I just noticed on one of my girls, that some of the scales are slightly lifted. I'm thinking she is in an early stage of scaly leg mites. Can anyone confirm this with the pics attached? I will need to start treating her tomorrow. I will clean the coop, sprinkle DE, wash her legs and put olive oil on them to drown the mites away 2-3 times a week. Any other advice? Thanks.

Ps. excuse her long nails. Lol. They have always been naturally long. She got a trim today and will again next week. Anyone else have chickens with naturally long nails? What do you do to maintain them?

Her legs looks fine, except the 2nd pic does look like some raised scales. You could just treat for scaly mites, won't hurt. This is from my notes ....

Scaly Legs - Soak in warm water & mild dish soap. With toothbrush scrub with vinegar, garlic or Neem Oil. Smear leg with Coconut Oil. Clean out coop; remove shavings; spray Orange Insect Spray or DE, spread lavender, lemon grass, thyme, wormwood in shavings.

For severe case - Ivermectin (pour on) - Rub onto the legs, wear gloves. Std 0.75ml = 25ml ea leg & 25ml on skin. Ivomec on daily 1 & day 10, rub some kind of oil on legs daily.

dawg53 - Nu Stock
aart - Vaseline or Bag Balm 1x wk for 2 - 3wks

I agree, it won't hurt to slather on some oil.

As for nails? If she is not wearing them down by scratching in the dirt, then just maintain them by giving her a regular trim:)

fwiw - DE will not treat or kill mites/lice or scaly leg mites. It can be a respiratory irritant. If you see active lice or mites on the body, it would be best to treat with a Permethrin based poultry spray or dust.

I don't actually see mites yet. But I'll be cleaning the coop today and will check closely. Thanks!
