Scaly Leg Mites?

I don't actually see mites yet. But I'll be cleaning the coop today and will check closely. Thanks!
SLM you cannot see with the naked eye, they are microscopic and live under the scales on the legs. Evidence of their presence is seen by raised scales, the scales can eventually have a crusty/caked appearance. The debris that raises the scales if mite poop. Oils or a systemic treatment of something like Ivermectin will treat SLM.

Mites on the body can sometimes be seen during the day with heavy infestations. Some mites live on the chicken while others live in their housing and come out to feed at night. Inspecting birds after dark is always a good idea to ensure you don't have a mite infestation. Lice can be seen during the day, these live on the bird.
Here's some good information along with photos to help you i.d. any problems:

Thank you!

Scaly leg mites don't mean there are any other type of mites present, but it's a good time to check, since you're already dealing with one type. Treating the coop is pretty much the same for all of them. Martin's 10% Permethrin liquid concentrate in a sprayer, diluted according to directions is pretty safe. Remove water dishes, feeders, old nesting material, etc. first, then spray everything, especially the underside of the roosts. Let it dry, then put everything back in, including fresh bedding. Repeat in 10 days. All insecticides are toxic to some degree, but this is not as harsh/bad as most, and fairly safe to use. It will usually stop all types of mites. Any excess, spray around the outside of the coop. It will help keep ants at bay.

Thank you for the info! I cleaned down the whole coop and put all fresh bedding in. I also washed all 5 of my hens feet in Epson salt water and put olive oil on all their feet in case. I used an old toothbrush to wipe the olive oil on their feet hahah. They all took to it very well, I was surprised. I held each one for about 5 minutes before letting them go. My backyard is mostly dirt so naturally they got dirt all over their feet. Hahah. I will hope that while holding them the oil was doing it's job. I'll do it again tomorrow or on Thursday and see how it goes. Thanks!

I pour oil in a plastic container, dip the chickens feet, and legs, then put a lid on the container. I reuse it the next day. Yes, it gets some dirt in it. That doesn't matter much. I add more oil as needed. When the treatment is complete, I dump the oil, wash the container.

Just a little update. It's been a week or so and nothing has changed. Feet and scales look the same. They have not gotten worse, that's for sure. I'll just be keeping an eye on them. Thanks everyone!
