Hi peeps. I've treated my flock with ivermectin for a lice and mite infestation. I thought that it would get rid of the scaly leg mites but it clearly hasn't. My next course of action is vaseline on the legs. The research I've done says to apply the vaseline daily until the old leg scales fall off and the new ones have grown in.
Does anyone know approximately how long that will take? :idunno:)

Have you used the ivermectin at the proper dose and reperpted it at 14 days. Then you also need to treat the coop, roosts, and nests, after removing bedding. Which type of ivermectin have you used—oral or the pour on, or other?

Can you post some photos of the the legs?
What dosage of Ivermectin did you use?

Ivermectin likely killed the SLM, but the scales need to heal. If the scales have a lot of debris under them, then I would soak the legs, then gently brush them with a soft brush to loosen that up. Dry the legs well, then apply oil/ointment of choice - vaseline, castor oil, coconut oil, A+D ointment are some that people use. Nu-Stock can also be used.

There's really no way to be able to know how long it will take for the legs to look "good" again, but application of oil/ointment every few days would be good.

@Eggcessive and @Wyorp Rock I did what the vet prescribed. I think it was 1ml ivermectin to 1 litre of water. I sprayed it on them from vent to neck as the directions from vet stated and sprayed the coop and nest boxes. I repeated it in seven days as directed as well. I hope all these directions were on the right track.
The last treatment was 2 weeks ago and the legs of some of my older girls look pretty bad (in my opinion anyway). They have quite a few scales lifting up.
I have a busy workday tomorrow so I'll do the worst chickens with vaseline. Should I put vaseline on all of the chickens? Even the ones who aren't showing any SLM?
Thanks for the help. :)

This is weird, I have never heard of mixing such a small amount of Ivermectin with water and using it as a spray.
Did this actually work to rid the lice?

I agree, it's a bit odd to mix Ivermectin with water and spray it on. Do you have a bottle or the packaging that the vet gave you?

Were there lice/mites on the body as well?

I would apply oil/vaseline to the legs. It won't hurt to apply to all of them either.

It would also be a good idea to treat your coop. While SLM mainly live under the scales of the leg, they do move around/migrate, etc., so treating roosting bars, nesting boxes/housing would be necessarily to eliminate the critters. Permethrin spray can be used for that. Some use Nu Stock cream and rub it into the rooster bars and on the birds legs.

If you have Ivermectin Pour-on, it is placed on the back of the neck on the spinal area. Dosage is 0.1 ml (1/10th ml) per every 2 pounds of weight. For instance, a 6 pound chicken would get 0.3 ml. Repeat in 14 days. I have used it successfully on a skittish hen would who lose her mind if I touched her.

But normally, using a thick oil or salve works well, at least once a week rubbed into the scales. I have used Crisco shortening in a can, vaseline, coconut oil, canola oil, and castor oil is probably least messy. One can buy castor oil for under $3 in small bottles, but if you go online, you can buy a quart for under $15.
