Scaly skinned newly hatched chick???

Well, he has passed on. Poor little thing.

After observing him for several hours we decided to put some mercy to his suffering.

His symptoms beyond the weird feather thing are as follows:

Constant peeping in distress
Pooping regularly until it turned tarry
Unable to get warm
One leg would not fold properly and stuck out in front
Unable to stand

I had a similar chick a few years ago and though its grew up a little, it never fully developed properly. It ended up always flipping over on its back and getting trampled.

So its with a sad heavy heart I had to say goodbye. :hit

I am sorry. At least you can walk away knowing you did the right thing for the little guy. I had a chick in my last brood who was the size of a two-week old at 10 weeks, and still was mostly down feathers and peeped. She seemed to always be in pain, and one day I came down to the coop to find that one of the older hens had attacked her, and she was not doing well. I had to put her down, and it was so hard. I still do not know what happened with her. She started out as a normal red star pullet but at about two weeks, it was almost like her growth hormones just sort of quit. She hardly ever ate, and when I refilled their feeders I had to take her out until the "mob" settled down after filling their crops so she would not be trampled.
