Had all of the girls and boys out today to have play time. All my babies, and the big ones. I was up by my house putting in my blue berry bushes when I heard Tuck make a racket, and I looked over to see him, and all of his girls running for cover. All of a sudden I heard a whoosh, and saw the shadow. I looked up, and there it was, the biggest red hawk I have ever seen soaring over all of my little ones. I dropped my shovel, and took off running like a bat out of h@#% screaming at the top off my lungs for my son, and to try and scare that bird away. I am 43, and I don't think I have ever ran than fast in my life. I have never been so scared in my life. I can happily report that every one took cover. They did a great job of hiding. The only ones left out in the open were my little goslings. Everyone else was either in a cage, under a snowmobile, or shrub, and in the barn. I am glad I looked up when I did.

I live in red-tail hawk heaven and I thought I may have trouble as there are two pair on the mountains to the east and west of me. I found out why they seem to avoid my chickens the other day! I saw the shadow and heard the rooster call an alarm at the same time, then all H-E-double hockey sticks broke out. My dogs barreled into the open and actually jumped into the air at the hawk, barking and growling. It was almost as if they had been waiting for the bird to do a fly by...seemed concerted to me.

My older dog will drive crows and buzzards away also....must have been traumatized by a bird as a youngster!

Sounds like good dogs to me. I have a couple of bald eagles that fly around too. I better lose some weight while chase birds away...lol

Yeah, it looks like I am going to start putting things around the yard so that they can hide under. They are usually in the run, but I let them in the yard with me every day. Good thing I was out there. Any ideas on what I can put out there for them to hide under?

That sure is a spook. Glad all your birds are ok. There are a few hawks here now but, they stay away from the property. Seems some Blackbirds and Cat Birds made their nest in the bushes bordering the property and whenever the hawk comes down they start their alarm and attack the hawk in mid air. Once the hawk ran through some bushes by his little nemesis attackers he stays well away from our land now.
