we live out in the middle of no where, like 20 minutes from town. i always thought it was safe here.. i guess not!!

i have been trying to sleep since 9pm, i never EVER lock my door, but for some reason tonite when i went to bed i shut the porch light off and locked the door. i laid in bed for almost 3 hours, tossing and turning, for somereason couldnt sleep.
i got up, called hubby (hes on the road driving truck) and went out to have a smoke.. thats when i noticed 3 cop cars in front of my house!! long story short, the neighbors got into a huge fight (one ended up 100yards past my house on the ground after being drop kicked, there is blood all over the road...) then the other guy started shooting at the guy on the ground with a .22!! OMG im all riled up. im worried! its just me here and my 2 little girls. hubby is in colorado .

i cant sleep now!! i have my lab sitting with me now.. im freaked!

That is why I have two HUGE Pit Bulls(not everyone knows they are sissies) and several close loaded firearms! DH used to work out of town and we are off in the backwoods...never any trouble. I had two girls here as well...it can be nerve racking!!!! Get a few more dogs and a shotgun!!!

i do have a shot gun but i have never loaded it... i do have several rifles. i have 3 other dogs but they are shelties .. guess i need to look for another big dog?

Generally speaking we only lock our doors when we're home.

When we leave, we usually don't bother... esp. the back door.

I figure if someone cases the joint they'll know to hit when we aren't home, easy... rather than waiting until we are home, having to deal with locks, and some very mad very well armed (blades and blunt weapons -staves, flails, daggers, swords, even rolling pins and T-ball bats) residents.

Which most think is totally asinine. But IMHO my family is WAY more important than our crappy old TV... I will do whatever I have to protect US... but I'm not getting in a fight/dying for my 'stuff'.

So... note to any thieves who've googled and landed here... wait until we leave... thank you.

Anywho... I'm glad to hear that all you lost was sleep. Living here we've been pretty well okay... but when we were over on "Crackland" (what those that lived there called the street) it was scary... I lost a LOT of sleep... gun shots and drug raids (and labs exploding) not to mention all the registered sex offenders... it will drive you absolutely nuts. But, thinking you're safe to find out that kind of crap is right there in your yard... that's such a huge emotional toll. Security, Trust... once lost is SO hard to get back.

Just keep those doors locked... and maybe consider another dog... and maybe weapons/self-defense training... if not outright firearm training... you have to do what makes you feel safe, you know we're all are behind you.

Big dogs, trained correctly, can be a HUGE deterrent IMO. I have had to use the dogs to back a few folks off...just saw/heard them in the window LOL! NEVER had to threaten with a weapon...EVER...and folks KNEW we were alone. A Lab, good dog, but not scary. Pit Bull, good dog, AND scary. Not many knew the dogs would not hurt a fly

I trained them to growl ONLY, never to attack. Most Pits smile big toothy grins anyway and folks pee themselves...I still kinda find that funny.....but that is why I went with big ole baby Pitties. They are fairly easy to train and loyal to a fault in my experience. NOBODY messes with their momma(me) or their babies(the girls).

Well if you are thinking Pit Bull, there are PLENTY who need to be rescued! And uh well they eat ALOT because they are SO HIGH ENERGY! They need a job. Mine are protectors of us and the flock...they chicken wrangle

and goat...well they fight with the goats...just fun, no injuries, they like to challenge the buck though, and he enjoys it just as much as they do

VERY fun dogs to have so long as they work.

Wow, scary for you.

I wish you lived closer to me, I have the perfect puppy for you. She's a Akita/Gt Pyr cross. Looks like a floppy eared akita, acts like a big ,cuddly, goofy Pyr. I did catch her sitting and staring at a neighbor I worry about. No barking, just sitting and staring. She's 6 mos old. Good girl!

I like the pup, but I have 7 already and she's looking for a home. Anyone want a sweet intimidating looking cuddle bear?
(I'd ship her to you and your girls if that would help you get some sleep).

My mom had a pit.. He was the greatest. Every one was affraid of him but he wouldnt hurt a fly. He even groomed the kittys. At the same time my mom had a black lab. Now if some thing at the house went bad. The pit would bark and snarl.. But would never attack or any thing. Now that darn black lab would attack and maul.. It killed many raccoons and skunks. Even bit some one that attacked my brother.. The Lab was way more scary in my book than a lab.. But I guess that is just me, and because I knew the dogs.. I always watched that darn lab closely...

I want a pit. But where I live they are not allowed.. Grrr. Darn my chihuahua is more dangerous that a pit bull.. Big grown men wont even go near my 7 year old chihuahua.. They have all been bit by her when trying to reach into my car.. Basically they were teasing her. I still think it is funny seeing grown guys affraid of a 3 pound dog.
